I'm probably in the minority, but I think I would do it. The fact that I'm in the minority though, might be cause for you to have a backup plan.

The GM-8 is rated at 30lbs, the same as my Sirius mount. I will not even use the C9.25 on the Sirius, just way to much vibration for me. But I am inclided to believe that Losmandy is one of those companies that is conservative with their load estimates. I know for a fact Takahashi is like that, when they say a mount holds 30lbs, it actually holds 30lbs and holds it steady.

I once had a C9.25 mounted on my GM-8 and it worked well, but was nearing the mount's limit. I think a C11 would be pushing it.

There was, briefly, a beefed-up version called the G9 that was intended for use with the C9.25 (the GM-8 was intended for use with the C8). I believe that they ended up adding the upgraded components to the standard GM-8 so later ones are a little beefier than the original GM-8. The G11 is intended for use with the C11.

I have a C11 and I wouldn't want to put it on anything less than an Atlas or EQ-6. Although a GM-8 is a worthy mount, I doubt you be satisfied with a C-11 mounted on it. However, if you are inclined to try it, you can add VSPs (vibration suppression pads) to your setup, which will help with vibrations.

I've never used a C11 on either the CG5 or GM8. I owned a C11 on a G11 for 10+ years. It was a great combo. I wanted a smaller and lighter mount for some smaller OTAs so considered the GM8. I poked around and asked questions and decided a CG5 would be at least as good for visual, had superior features, and was way cheaper than the GM8. Celestron sells the C11 on a CG5 (upgraded when the started doing it) and I think it'll work as well, if not better, than a GM8. Naturally, there are other considerations.

I don't know if the CG5 would be better than a GM8, I own both at the moment and the GM8 definitely feels much more robust than the CG5, though it is lacking GOTO features (which I did not like on the ASGT mount anyways)...

Mechanically the GM -8 would probably have an edge, electronically the ASGT has better features. To be honest I wouldn't use either with a C11 but would look at the next class of mounts up (G11 or CGE)

I have a C9 with small finder on a GM8 and consider the mount pretty much max'd out. Focusing can be a bit time consuming due to scope shake, but once focused the mount is adequate for viewing and lunar and planetary imaging. Balance has to be really good with the C9/GM8 or else the dec slow motions aren't very smooth.

I'd worry about the mount being a little top-heavy and prone to tipping.

>>>I'd worry about the mount being a little top-heavy and prone to tipping. <<<

If it's properly balanced, the CG of the scope and CWs is at the intersection of the RA and Dec axes. Adding the weight of the mount itself moves the CG a bit further down and might or might not move it closer to the az axis. This net CG needs to project downward within the triangle formed by the legs of the tripod to be stable. The closer it is to the center of the triangle, and the larger the triangle, the more stable.

I have both a ASGT and a GM8....and have used my C11 on both.....The GM8 might be a bit more stable but it is close.....

Abe:

Should be no trouble for visual use at all.

The GM8 is my work horse mount

It and my TEC 8 are a great visual combo. Damping times are about a second with no annoying high frequency vibrations during focusing at high power.

Coming in at ~31 pounds as shown, I would imagine, except for tube OD, it's of similar length and mass as a C11.

Jeff
