While I have never used the 90mm version, I did own the 5" Orion for quite some time and it was a great scope.

You definitely can use it for that, but there are a couple of issues like image shift, mirror flop, and the only ports are the two 1.25" eyepiece ports- there is no rear cell like a SCT. I am sure that someone sells a 1.25" photo adapter for it (probably Vixen), but I don't know how easily find accessories like a focal reducer to fit.

Mwedel has some great comments on the Orion 90mm Mak. I didn't know the tabletop version comes with the 10mm plossl as well as the 25mm. -It does. The package of the same scope with the EQ-1 does not. Also correct that the scope does have the standard Orion finderscope foot, and I definitely like that it has a RDF instead of the 6x20 finderscope that comes with the EQ-1 package, as the 6x20 is absolutely junk.

The only question I'd have about the tabletop mount is whether with the scope being f13.9, how hard will it be to keep an object in the viewfinder with the 10mm eyepiece? My brother couldn't keep his EQ-1 targeted on Saturn long enough to switch places with my nephew to see it, but then my brother hasn't figured out how to polar align the EQ-1 (not even roughly, it's so pathetic!). I bought him the single axis tracking motor for the holidays this year, along with a 9X50 RACI and a 45-degree correcting prism for terrestrial viewing.

If the tabletop mount can stay on-target, I definitely agree the tabletop package is just plain better all around than the EQ-1 package. That 6x20 finderscope really is the worst part of the EQ-1 package.

Good question...keeping things in the eyepiece seems to be second only to finding thing in the first place in the pantheon of new observer gremlins.

I haven't used the tabletop Mak. My 90mm Mak is a couple of years old, and this past spring I put it on a Universal Astronomics DwarfStar mount, which has adjustable tension on both axes. It's easy to get the tension just right to get buttery motions.

The tabletop mount Orion is using for its new gaggle of grab-n-go scopes appears to be an upgraded version of the Celestron FirstScope mount. Improvements over the FS mount include adjustable tension on both axes (FS only has that on the altitude axis), an integral 3/8" well on the base so you can put the whole kit on a tripod, and a dovetail attachment between scope and base so you can put the scope on another mount or put another small scope on the base. I have a FirstScope and although the optics are nothing to write home about (uncollimatable f/4 spherical primary), the mechanics are, frankly, amazing: solid support plus the smooth movements I'm used to from a finely-tuned Dob.

So if Orion's tabletop mount works as well as the one on the FirstScope, I would think that tracking would be a breeze.

Two things I am curious about:
(1) Now that you can get Orion's 90mm Mak with the tabletop mount, 2 eyepieces, and superior RDF finder for $199, why are they still offering the spotting scope version with no mount, 1 eyepiece, and the lousy 6x20 finder for $20-30 more? And are they actually selling any?
(2) Does Orion have any plans to sell the tabletop mini-Dob mount as a standalone product? I have been tempted to pick up a FunScope just for the mount. Fifty bucks for a solid, smooth alt-az mount that can be used on a tabletop or a tripod is a great deal; that it comes with an RDF, eyepieces, and a scope is gravy.

The amount of light pollution (LP) should not be a consideration as to whether or not to get a dob. There will be no more LP if you do, and it can't gather more because there is no more to gather than there is for a smaller aperture. A larger aperture will be able to combat the LP somewhat by giving higher mags which will spread out the light and make the LP dimmer per area.
