Leaving scope while imaging...
      #3434885 - 11/07/09 03:42 PM

I was hoping to get some shooting in tonight, but I have to attend an event tonight for 15 minutes. Do you think it would be a bad idea to set up and start shooting and then leave the rig while I attend my event?
I will be gone about an hour max and theft wouldn't be a problem. What could go wrong?

I don't think anything will go wrong other than theft - if that's a problem in your area. Just make sure all the cords have enough slack - 15 mins or an hour shouldn't be long enough to pose any problems.

Wellllll....

I often sleep while imaging. However, I'm only 30 seconds away from the scopes and I have a laptop near me that is monitoring the session (remote desktop of the imaging laptop). I haven't had too many bad events. I've been awakened by PHD beeping with LOW SNR warnings before, and I've overslept so my mount stopped at the limits (hard stops, not crashed). So, if you ensure cables are clear and the weather is good with no clouds in sight, I'd think the risks are small.

However there are some risks. For example, you might be away much longer than you thought, a power failure/restore might occur, or some odd equipment failure. I'd think through what are the worst cases and what your equipment would do and decide from there.

Thanks guys,
My biggest concern would be having PHD guiding lose the star and then slowly slew my mount until it wrapped my cords up into a ball. It look clear tonight, but Il'l have to see when I begin guiding.
I have left it before while I was inside my house, usually with another laptop doing the monitoring. But I won't be able to correct anything that goes wrong. Don't care about losing the shooting session if something goes wrong, but I don't want to do any permanent damage.

As long is the scope is nowhere near striking the mount, I usually leave mine alone running on auto for an hour or so at a time. I pop my head in every so often to make sure nothing has gone wrong.

I'm back... It's fine! Of course as soon as I pulled up, the clouds came out. So for now I'm shooting darks hoping the clouds disappear.

definitely OK no point using an autoguider if you are going to sit their and watch it all night imo.

As long as your camera or mount motors wont collide
I had that last night While imaging m31 I was imaging to the east meridian and after about 45 minutes the camera was almost colliding with the mount.

My old LXD motors would collide after a certain time period
