Old NASA stuff new

Not long ago I had some time to drive around Cape Canaveral. Here's what I saw:

This is the remains of LC-19 (my photo). LC 19 was where all of the Gemini/Titan missions were launched from.

This is it "back in the day." (NASA photo)

Here's LC14. All the Orbital Mercury missions, including John Glenn's launched here using the Atlas rocket.

Here's an aerial view with Gordon Cooper's ride on the pad.

Launch Complex 34 - Where Apollo 1 was to have launched and Apollo 7 did launch. There's a memorial to Grissom, White and Chaffee there now. In the distance is LC 37, where the Delta 4 rocket is launced now. On the pad at that time was the first Delta 4 "Heavy" - the one that didn't quite put it's payload (a large hunk of concrete) where it was supposed to go.

Here's Apollo 1 on the pad.

I took the tourist tours several years ago; it really was sad to see the rusting hulks that used to be at the apex of the space program.

The rusting hulks don't bother me so much. Obsolete facilities, it was just cheaper to abandon them in place than to refurbish them. Some of them were refubished, though. LC37, which now launches the Delta 4 used to be for Early Saturn launches. LC41, once used for Titan launches now is used by the Atlas 5. LC40, also once used for Titan launches now has SpaceX's Falcon 9 ready to go. LC17 is still used for Delta 2 launches.

The rest of them are pretty much rusting hulks - Except for LC 5, where Mercury Redstone was launched. It's part of the Visitor center now. (NASA illustration)

The photo of the Saturn 1B is actually a photo of the launch of SA201, which was the first flight of that vehicle type. It was launched on February 26, 1966 almost a year before the Apollo fire. At the time, Apoolo 1 was designated as Apollo 204 and did not get the "Apollo 1" designation until after the fire.

The Saturn 1B vehicle for the Apollo 204 mission was SA-204, and after the fire it was recycled for use in the Apollo 5 mission, which was an unmanned flight of he Apollo Lunar Module.

I am an amateur space historian as well as amateur astronomer. I went to KSC and Cape Canaveral AFS in 1975. Back then many of the complexes you show were still intact. I will scan in the photos someday and share them.
