I just noticed that Astronomics is now listing two new 100 degree eyepieces from TMB, a 16mm and a 9mm. Has anyone heard anything about these? They're listed for $300. It looks like the 100 degree market is beginning to heat up.

I am going to step out of my shell here.
You may buy by price or help support the company that brings the community CN and helps with growing the hobby of astronomy, not just to line their pockets with one of the 156 stores they have online.
Not trying to be prickly, but the stores that have lifted this industry on their shoulders for decades, Astronomics (US), OPT, Anacortes, High Point, etc... I would hope would get consideration if the prices are close over the venture capitalists that have changed ownership three times in the last seven years.

Alright, I feel like an idiot. I just noticed that a thread about these eyepieces already exists:
Low cost version 100 degree AFOV
Sorry for starting a new thread. Feel free to lock this one.

Mike,
I personally have purchased from you (when I say you I mean you at Neaf), OPT, HighPoint,Telescopes.com and several others and I agree that for known brands (Televue, Orion, Celestron, etc) I would rather purchase from established companies but for something like this EP which we know nothing about (quality or view wise), I would rather pay the least amount so that if the product doesn't meet my expectations it is not a big loss.

And hey , you gotta figure too , for $20.00 more the thing will say TMB on it ! .......Although Zhumell is indeed making a name for itself , I think , if I'm spending $280.00 on an ocular , I'm gonna kick down an extra 20 for one that says TMB on it !

Don't forget to mention you are a CN member and astronomics will give you a discount. It will likely make the price the same or less.

I'm 200% in agreement, and I don't think it could be said better or more to the point. This hobby wouldn't be what it is without the companies mentioned.
Competition isn't competition when prices are cut just to try to drive others out of business in order to make a quick buck and then repeat the process in another field. In the long run, as the number of competitors declines, it leads to less competition, poorer quality, and frequently, higher prices, as well as a lack of concern for the customer.

I'm all for supporting local family owned businesses, especially those that have supported a field through good times and bad. However, I've always felt this get's tricky in practice. Why stop at stores? Couldn't one make an argument that the likes of Televue, TMB, AP and other family owned business that have spent a vast amount of resources innovating and creating original/better designs warrant more loyalty than the countless mass marketers that have popped up in the last few years? I'm not saying one is better than the other but merely saying that there's more than one way to support this hobby - innovative consistent production and sales by the market leaders vs the second and third tier manufactures and distributors who's support of the hobby comes in the form of letting more people pursue their dreams of owning a great product at a competitive price. Some may say a $20 price difference is insignificant but that's for that person, it might be a justifiable reason for someone else to go buy from a "corporate" business.

But $20 as compared to $2000 is fairly significant no matter how you slice it.
You can support the innovators just the same from purchasing from the vendors that have been around for years. Problems solved.

Actually the difference in price is only $5.05 after 5% rebate! So if I buy one of these I will go with Astronomics!!

Can't argue that point. As an aside I first was a member of CN around 2002/03 when it was independent. Rejoined recently and wasn't surprised to find out that it was bought out. What was surprising was that besides growing exponentially I couldn't tell overtly that it was owned by a major distributor. Thanks a lot Mike for keeping this place in line with the original spirit. Hat's off to you and I'll definitely keep your business in mind for my next purchase.

Being a supporter of capitalism, I have no problem with venture capitalists. But I would support Astronomics in this. They are always there when I need something, and have never done me wrong. And besides, what's $20 among friends? I support Mike and the gang, and hope they are around to my last day buying equipment.

Yes, you could certainly make that argument, and I'm not opposed at all to it. Of course, not everyone can afford those manufacturer's products, so there is definitely a place for the more general mass market type product. But that takes you back to who you buy them from, and that takes us back to my earlier point - this hobby is far better served by staying with the established dealers as opposed to the price-cutting artists.
