Why is Canon 20d so "busy"?! new
      #3434422 - 11/07/09 10:45 AM

I think either my camera is screwed up or I'm doing something wrong. After the camera is done with an exposure (say 3-5 minutes) the readout says "busy" for up to 5 minutes. During this "busy" stage, no other functions are allowed...I just have to wait. When I spoke with the guy at Penn Camera, he said it was due to a formatting issue and I should re-format the memory card after each time the pictures are dumped into the computer. I have been doing that, but the problem seems to be getting worse and the "busy" status seems to take longer and longer...When I first got the camera it was "busy" for like 2 seconds max between shots...
Does anybody know what's going on?

Doesn't sound good... Could the card be failing?

There is a noise reduction filter setting (custom function menu) that you have to disable otherwise longer exposures will tie the camera up.

The noise reduction setting is off. No sense wasting precious scope time shooting darks right?

Hi Jade, I had a CF card go like that on my 20d, a new 'fast' card cured it (and improved my download time considerably).

My first guess would be the CF card as well.

cool... thanks for input. I bought a cheap card last time; it's either a 1GB or 2GB card. On Penn's site the cards have speeds listed as 30x, 100x, and 600x depending on the card. Do these speeds relate to anything? Would buying a new "faster" speed card help?

Edit: oops...missed Jc's comment. A faster card sounds like the way to go eh?

Hi Jade,

If you shoot a 5 minute exposure and the camera is "busy" for another 5 minutes after that, it is almost certainly because you have long-exposure noise reduction on.

Double check that setting. It's custom function 02.

Is it busy for 5 minutes after a regular short exposure (1/100 second for example)?

Another thing to check is if you're using DSLR Shutter, is if the Mirror Lockup checkbox is on. If I recall, it doubles the amount of time for each sub with post processing.

Jerry is right! The noise reduction setting was turned on. I didn't even check it because I specifically remember making sure it was turned off a while back....but it got turned on somehow. Maybe I turned it on and just don't remember? Oh well... Looks like I'm good to go! Now if my wife will just buy me Jerry's book for Christmas I'll be good to go!
Thanks guys!
