I finally got around to starting my long anticipated dob project. I wanted something easily transported and fairly light. I really started about 2 yrs ago with the mirror cell and a couple of different designs I had thought about, but when GaryS posted about his 8" Travel Scope I knew this was the one. Simple construction with basic hand tools and minimal experience was the deciding factor. Although mine is not "airline compatible", when nested for transport it takes 1/5 the space of my original solid tube/ eq5 setup and is much, much lighter.
If you are thinking of a similar project I'd give this design serious consideration. Easily built with basic handtools in a minimal sized workshop (corner of the basement) this project was a really fun build.
Thanks for your posts Gary... two thumbs up.

Hey Kev:
Wow -- that scope looks great! Nice job.
I can't tell you how gratifying it is to see someone use the information I post on my web site. I mean, I know people do, but seeing the picture of your scope really made my day.
Here's hoping you have many enjoyable nights with the scope and produce lots of fabulous sketches at its eyepiece.
Well done!
Gary

Hey guys, I'm a College student at the Evergreen State College in Olympia WA. I am building my own ideas of what a travel scope should be. I'm using some of Gary's Nesting ideas mixed with Dan Grays sting Dob ideas on my 8" F/6. Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration. I got the plans all out on paper and I've finished my Mirror Box. Any one can track my progress or give me any advice they think I may need at http://surftosky.blogspot.com/

Otto, don't forget to post pictures. Gotta have lots of pics.
Gary, thanks. Love your design. I thought about everything I did to make it and it really could be done with just a hand saw and cordless drill with a few attachments.
Nate, welcome to the forums. Nice looking scope in the works. You should start a new topic and post your link there. I'm sure others would love to watch your progress and it will get lost with this thread.
