The Antares and Rho Ophiuchi region new
      #3435615 - 11/07/09 11:36 PM

This is my favorite object (region) and I have tried imaging it using different focal lengths and framing. So far, I found 300mm being the best compromise between FOV and resolution for this region. This is an image I took during my recent trip to Australia this summer. I know this is a bit off season, I thought it may still be of interest to some. Comments and suggestions are most welcome!

Apart from contrast and resolution, I found the most serious drawback for long camera lenses compared to a good scope is that they tend to produce ugly looking flares around bright stars. Here I have tried to mask them using software produced star spikes, with some success I think.

Technical details:
EF300mm f/2.8, EM-11, modified 5D,
iso1600, 7 x 300s exposures (total 35 mins)
autoguided using SBIG STV with eFinder
stacked using DSS, processed using PS CS4
Synthetic star spikes created using StarSpikes Pro
