My alignment scope was not loose within the axis. It's solid, and a pleasure to use.
And after the incident with the "C" clamp, I wouldn't be one to trust Meade on the accuracy of their instruction books
One issue I did have with mine, though: one of the little button batteries used to illuminate the crosshairs basically fell apart.
When it wouldn't light up anymore (after only 3 or 4 observing sessions), I opened the case and one of the battery casings came apart, leaking black powder all over my hands.
It burns!

My first LXD had that problem as well: it is supposed to be tight and aligned so that the silver circle can be used for alignment.I have a link for aligning this somewhere and when I find it I will post.
For accurate LAT/LON, use www.airnav.com for the nearest airport. The one 3 miles North of Sheboygan is listed as 43.46.10LAT/87.51.05LONG

Polar scope seems intact here. Latitude adjustment t-screw lost 1 chrome ball, super glued back on.
For lat/lon I used terraserver http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=14&x=138&y=1513&z=16&w=1&qs=%7csheboygan%7cWI%7c
