Left DAV Weds, am over to my friends' 40 miles east. I've had a miserable cold until today.

I'll start the DAV buildings in May, having gotten acceptable quotes.

Home tomorrow.

Must have picked up a bug in NY. I had a miserable week too. Last night was the first night I got decent sleep since we've been home.

Good to hear that you're starting on the DAV lot.

I was sick Tues and Wed after NEAF. Went back to work Thursday still feeling a bit rough but fought through it.

Looks like May will be mostly on the road. Leave next Thu to be in place for a Fri meeting with the building contractor in Covington, GA, then on to a Barth Motorhome GTG in Goshen IN.

After return ~5/21, off again 5/26 to Deerlick and my friend's house (another, smaller Barth GTG) 40 miles east. Plan to lurk there and at Deerlick until time to leave for BEOTS... oh, wait, when is that?

We're having trouble getting the date of Jay's college orienation. It's not on their website and we're sposed to be notified. Guess we'll call tomorrow and see if we can figure out what the heck we have to do in June. It's nuts this year.

Well, school is more important anyway. Gotta take good care of those nice kids of yours! You guys are blessed to have such good kids. So few of them nowadays.

Haven't been doing any imaging lately. My SBIG ST2000XM is acting up. The doggone chip is freezing up all the time. Somehow there's must be a leak in there that is allowing moist air to form frost on the chip when I try to cool it.
I have the Particle Wave Technologies disposable dessicant setup on my camera and after several attempts and replacements of the dessicant bags, I ended up returning to the original baked dessicant container and put that back on the camera to see if it'll dry out the internal chamber. If that doesn't do it, I'll try one more thing, and that is to open the camera and clean off the chip and then make sure the O-ring is placed correctely on the edge before I re-seal it again. If that don't do it, it's a trip back to SBIG for maintenance! maybe I will buy the ST8300M and use that and when I get the St2000 back, I'll have 2 of them!!!

I was outside ALL NIGHT! It was so clear, transparent, dry, and very mild! I finally got my new rig set up. No I didn't get rid of the ED178 telescope, But I did pick up a old Meade 12" f/10 EMC OTA to image some deep space galaxies. Below is the "Whale Galaxy" NGC 4631.
This was taken at f/10. The exposures are 10x5 minutes in RGB. Aligned and combined in Images Plus. Autodarks and flats were applied. Further processing done in Adobe Photoshop CS2, Neat Image and Star Spikes Pro applied to increase saturation of the star colors.

I am so surprised that this came out as good as it did because the wind really started kicking up and there were reported wind gusts of up to 20 mph during the early morning hours.

Ok, now I gotta go outside and cut the grass!

Nice one, Lenny!

I got out the night of the 3rd (my birthday!), it was uber dark and transparent here also... though windy...

This widefield M81/82 is the result (12 x 10 minutes with darks, flats, bias, etc.). Pre-processed in DSS, and post in CS3. QHY8 one shot color on TMB80SS with WO 0.8X FF/FR and IDAS LPS...

I'm hoping to get out again tonight...

I love these clear, dark, crisp spring nights before the humidity and bugs are "out"...

Best to all y'all in BEOTS and Ohio-thread land!

clear enough skies

(a one year older Dave!)

Well, Steph, we KNOW when the Grand Canyon Star Party is...if you need something for amusement!

Might be tight finding a place to bunk, though!

Happy Birthday, Jim!

Looks like your present is staring at you (and all of us as well): your CSC looks awesome for a fairly moon free night tonight!

Thanks tremendous bunches, Steph and Dave. Good day to have a b'day; grandson out of the hospital from his diabetes diagnosis, many other family and work issues resolving for the better.

What present? That's normal skies here in the land of all beach, no ocean. Well, except for the El Nino experience the last 8 months...Grew up about 15 miles from BEOTS, wanna get back there for one, or at least LCSP.

Three opportunities to enjoy along with us: Grand Canyon Star Party in June (7000 feet - it IS full of stars!), All Arizona Messier Marathon in March, All Arizona Star Party in October most years, this year November.

One guilty pleasure about GCSP is that you don't HAVE to set up and do the visitor outreach thing every night; plenty of other isolated locations if you want a break from sharing the night sky awareness. But that ends around 10:30 PM every night anyway, so the rest of the night it's just us astro folk. But the visitors are cool as well, and love to learn. Ya never know whose life you'll touch, and who might just change yours, too.

Thanks, Lenny... I'm ever so slowly learning how to eek out more detail from my captures...

I have to resist the urge to upgrade mount/scope/camera right now... what I have is WAY beyond my current abilities in post processing so there's literally NO POINT to changing equipment anytime soon...

(I keep telling myself!)

Jim: I'm well (Jealously) familiar with the Tucson sky scene... I went to high school and college there... it sure has changed since THEN though...

Wish I could convince wifey to move there though... my boys would love it as would I (astronomically!)... but she's adamantly opposed (and yes, she's been there quite a few times)...

I *might* convince her of Prescott or Flagstaff area...

still a "work in progress"...

What we ARE convinced of, is that we gotta get outta this NorthEast place (for many reasons I've shared with some of you directly, but cannot do so here on this forum!)

Wish I could do BEOTS this year <sniff>...

Maybe LCSP though???

Dave, love that intricate detail on M82. I've had great luck with large apertures here in getting a lot of texture visually and the little bugger fascinates me. Nice texture!
