GIRO alignment question new
      #338688 - 02/09/05 05:11 PM

Hi Folks,

When mounting 2 scopes on a GIRO can both scope be aligned exactly on the same object without adjusting the mount ? In other words, I point the right scope at the object, is the left scope connected and aligned exactly at the same point in the sky without adjusting the left scope ?

Thanks,
Tim

Tim,

Generally yes, it depends on magnification. Both can be aligned perfectly in alt by slackening the two allen screws on the arm, and lining up with any distant object.

With my set up of a TV85 and TMB105, I tend to keep a wide field eyepiece in the TV85 (27mm Pan), and high power eyepieces in the TMB. An object central in the TMB will be just off centre in the TV85.

Although I have just stripped and re-greased it, in doing so I removed the stainless steel collar, from the stainless steel arm, and adjusted everything with just the two aluminium arms on, which has reduced the spacing between the scopes, unfortunately due to cloud I have not had chance to try this out .

As I use a dovetail and plate for mounting, I have a theory that I could either introduce an adjuster screw at the back of the collar on the Giro arm to kick the back of the scope out, or simply use a thin packer or shim between the plate and the back scope ring, a small washer should do.

Having said that I find it fairly intuitive to know where the object is from one to the other, but having the 27mm Pan in the TV85 helps

Tim, that did the trick, keeping both saddle plates an equal distance from the centre axis results in an object central in both eyepieces.

Thanks for asking the question and getting me thinking about it, saves messing about trying to shim or otherwise align the scopes, I shall now kick myself for not thinking of the obvious solution a long time ago

I've replaced the two screws on the second arm to those with a larger knob, so the alignment is now very easy.

"Exactly at the same point in the sky". By my calculations, to be "exactly" spot on when sighting Sirius (8.6 ly distant), the two scopes have to be adjusted out of parallel by something on the order of 3e-16 degrees. That's for "exactly". If you want to be sloppy about alignment, that's your choice.
