Horsehead and Flame from earlier new
      #3446556 - 11/13/09 06:39 PM Attachment (15 downloads)

As we're starting to see Horsehead and Flame nebula images this season I had to "dust off" what I imaged this past winter. Orion isn't favorably positioned for me until January or February so I don't try until then. Having solved my DSS issues, and now using PS CS4 I redid what I imaged back in March. Although there are still some issues, I was pleasantly surprised at how much "red" I got with an unmodded camera. Suggestions welcome.

25 x 4 minute subs, 800 iso, 10 darks, no flats
AT 127 EDT, unmodded 40D, CLS filter(no red banding issues in winter)

Definitely. Modded cameras aren't necessary - but they are nice! It will be interesting to see the comparison later in the season. Great image Warren.

Nice results, considering the unmodded camera

Thanks bebert and s58y. I'm forever on the fence about modding, but I'm sure I'll have to at some point.

I'm not convinced on the modding--it obviously helps, but I shoot a lot of daytime stuff and having to process the white balance on everything else sounds like a bit of a pain.

Hi Eric, that's why I'm still on the fence about modding my 40D. None of the daylight images with modded cameras using CWB or special filters I've seen here are satisfactory to me. Each daylight image would still need additional tweeking.
At some point I may just pick up a used XS and have that modded.

Very nice shot Warren , to mod or not tormented me for a long time but when I finally went ahead and then got the X-nite filter for daytime I have been very happy with having a camera my wife can use without even knowing anything is different.
