NGC 659 Open Cluster new
      #3451293 - 11/16/09 01:03 PM Attachment (71 downloads)

Last night it was cold, about 12 degrees F outside but I suited up, deployed the light shields and put out the XT10 to take a look at a variety of Open Clusters in Cassiopeia. I found like I do with going through the Herschel list, some that were like, what?! and I'll make my notes and a very rough sketch and move on or others like NGC 663 that just beckon to have a fine sketch done. I did some sketching lat night and will post one that I did here. OC's observed last night were NGC 457 (old Friend) 436, 637, 559, 659, 663, 654 with M42, M31, M32, M110, and an attempt on 247 but it was much to low by the time I went there.

NGC 659 is a medium rich cluster of 50 to 100 stars. I recorded that at both 57x and 92x a ring of stars could be detected of faint stars while direct vision gave me more of a halo affect. I personally renamed this the Blinking OC since with averted vision more details came out.

This is a digital image produced on GIMP and I have attempted to show the shape of the cluster (looking at it the stars forming the outline are not tight enough based on the actual sketch) and the halo or glow that is evident with stars trying to peep out.

Jay,

Very nice sketch and report. 12 degrees is very cold for observing and especially sketching. That is too cold for my blood.

Frank

Great report & sketch Jay. Yeah, what Frank said! 12 degrees is way too cold for my thin Florida blood. Now that's a dedicated observer!

Thanks Nuncius, Frank and Shannon. It's warmer tonight, 27 F with a feel like 19 F.

Jay

Very nice sketch and a great report, to make us feel much warmer in Oregon!

It's currently 50 degrees F here at 5:30 AM. We have constant rain but unseasonally warm.

I would be doing something new but have to resort to improving on old images as this is the monsoon season in Oregon.

I'll look forward to your dedicated observations at sub-freezing temperatures.

Keep up the good work!

Mark

Jay,

An excellent observation of NGC 659 in Cassiopeia. A good effort on a very cold night. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
