2009 Leonid meteor cuts across Ursa Major
      #3454204 - 11/17/09 10:36 PM

A Leonid Meteor cuts across Ursa Major early in the morning of November 17, 2009. This is a composite image. Ursa Major starfield Canon Powershot A620 15 second exposure at F4, 7.3 mm focal length. Tracking provided by Meade LX250GPS SCT telescope.

Meteor rendered in Photoshop to recreate the meteor's appearance as seen by the human eye, not the CCD chip on the camera.

Matt,

You must have been quite impressed. I know I sure am looking at this fine sketch.

Matthew

Awesome digital rendering! I just went out and looked up, with patience after 15 minutes, I saw a similar meteor at 3:43 Am PST Nov 18th from the radiant point streaming through Ursa Major and into Lynx. I may try to render it in pastel as I did a Perseid a couple years ago, Spaceweather.com ran it as a pre-day reminder to the peak night ahead.

You should send your sketch to Spaceweather as they are short on images so far for 2009. I just think NASA physicist Dr. Tony Phillips will at least post it to their Leonids 2009 Gallery. (To Send images to Spaceweather > . Click in Right Side Column at front page "submit your images" >

Good luck,

Mark

Matthew,

I like how you've sketched the meteor - it really does match what I think of when I see these neat objects. It reminds me of the couple I saw during one of my most recent dark sky outings.

Lovely sketch Matthew! I wish I had used the color you chose for the ionization trail. Great capture and nicely integrated with the star field image.

Matthew,

An excellent observation of a Leonid meteor trail. It must have been spectacular over your skies. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
