Since NGC40 presents such an interesting progressive disclosure as the magnification goes up, I thought I'd try to detail the changes in a series of sketches.
Posted over in the deep sky section.
Cheers, -- Jeff.

Nice sketches and an interesting discussion about filters... Here is a sketch of NGC40 made last year at x300 (without filter) with a 12" dobson. Looks almost the same than your sketch at x330, but I didn't catch the oval form.

Thanks, Jef. The pinched shape was just starting to become apparent to me at 335X, but I see Jay on the other thread noticed it at 140X. I'll blame it on age.
Cheers, -- Jeff

Jeff,
Excellent study and as always outstanding sketches. Having seen this recently I find I'm in a quandary to either slow down my Herschel observations or get through them and go back . . . There are many items I would like to sketch like NGC 663 (that would be an interesting study to compare 663 to M103 as I think 663 holds up well to M103) but I found I felt rushed in doing even a rough sketch so that I could get through the items for last night. Anyway, again nicely done for the fact you have me rethinking my approach to my own observing right now.

Jay --
I keep some of the major lists active, but I don't work that hard at completing them. In fact, I don't even have all the Messiers logged (85 out of 110), and the H400 can be downright tedious in places (I currently have 167 out of 400).
Cheers, -- Jeff.

Jeff,
An excellent series of observations of NGC 40 at different magnifications showing more detail within the planetary nebula. Thank you for sharing them with us all.
Jef- An excellent observation of NGC 40 as well. A very interesting planetary nebula.
