RAZ:
In some ways you are certainly correct. In general, though, I would like to do what author, Steven Covey, suggests in his Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. That is to:
AGREE TO DISAGREE, AGREEABLY.
As a new member, I can appreciate what I must seem like to you. I'm sorry! Those people send me to the warpath, too.
I only hope by the time your posts reach 11 . . . hundred, that you will have learned enough of my motivations to understand my philosophy that, with NO harm intended, it is impossible to bake a cake without breaking some eggs!
Ill placed or not, I commend you for your integrity.
Cheers,

Raz: Hey, sometimes bashing is needed. A very close friend (worked together for 30 years and retired together) lives in Illinois and we stay with him and his wife when we go back to visit family and friends.
Last year, while we were back in Illinois, sitting on their deck I saw several cardinals (none here in Colorado). I didn't bring any binoculars so I asked if he had any. After looking for a 1/2 hour he found his only pair. A plastic lens (maybe 4 to 6 power x 25). He purchased these at some local drug store when he saw them hanging on a hook enclosed in that clear plastic casing that is nearly impossible to open.
You could not make out anything with them, even the cardinals that were maybe 25 feet away. He agreed that they were not that good but for $9.95 you couldn't go wrong.
Boy! You talk about bashing someone's binoculars.
We're still close friends.

I always endeavour to be as polite and diplomatic as any given situation warrants , but if a product is so poor as to be incapable of EVER providing to a consumer that which is necessary to carry out the purpose for which it was intended , then I think it only fair , not to mention educational , if that product is criticised in public for it's shortcomings .
We are fortunate here to have a member with specialised professional knowledge and more than 40 years of experience of servicing , repairing and selling that type of product , who is aware of the existence of such products in this particular marketplace .
Bill is between rock and a hard place .
Even diplomacy has it's appropriations of time and place .

Or you can go down to the Dollar Store for a bottle of Isopropyl, save another buck, and get even drunker.
And maybe go blind.
Ah, there's the rub....

There are many choices out there in the $100-$250 price range. Rick from Tokyo posted this morning that the Bushnell Legend Ultra HD can be had for $200. He ordered two pairs. Rick is VERY astute about binoculars. He has bought and sold 25X80 Steiners, Fujinon FMT SX and Nikon Astroluxe 70 mm binos. If you are looking for quality hand held bino I would wait a few days for his first light report....ERik D
Ahh, thanks for the complement Erik. Though have to say looking at my list of "SOLD" binos makes me feel LESS than astute!
In the spirit of giving credit due, my new purchase of Bushnell Legend Ultra HD relies heavily on Edz's thorough "highly recommended" review of the older Legend. He really does all the "heavy lifting" here so the rest of us can make good binocular purchases.
The Ultra HD's list of features just pushes all the right buttons for a nice "knock-around" ED-glass bino for hiking and nature. With a bonus high quality harness and camo fleece pullover thrown in for $195 shipped, I felt they are a no brainer. And like posted early in this thread, I also feel the same way about these Skymasters. Nice risk/reward ratio for $49.
happy new year!

"Social autistic" . . . I like that! I think I will steal it! You must have noticed how many times I have had to correct my last few posts. Since this stupid stroke, my fingers feel that if they get in the right AREA . . . it's good enough. My misspellings which were bad enough have gone up 80%, I use the wrong words, I chop off sentences, create some really strange words (strange characters and numerals included). Yep, socially autistic covers it pretty good.
Very observant, RAZ

You know, any pair of binos that generates this much editorial is worth $50.00 just for me to check out. I think I have that much in amazon credit.
Could be interesting to see how they match up to the 1980's 'UV Coeated' 7x50 Celestron 'Classical' an elderly former astronomer sold to me.

There is more than one way to purchase an inexpensive 15x70mm binocular.

Wow! I have a Celestron Nova EWA 7X50 purchased in the mid 1980s. I am over 50, not sure about the 'Classical" part but I don't like to think myself as "elderly" yet.
I can still do pump out enough Ranger push- up reps to match my age.....
Remember: "age is just a number"!
Happy New Year!

I've had a pair of Skymaster 15x70's for over a year now. I've found that they are pretty good, no collimation issues, though I knew how to collimate them if I needed to before I bought them. Certainly they are better than a plastic dept store 60mm refractor. I machined a more sturdy tripod bracket for them and have used them for daytime birdwatching too.

just buy em... as long as they dont look through a good pair they'll be fine if they dont get a duff pair as quality control with these is non existant, dont drop them as they will break, dont leave them in a hot car, drop them in water, use them in the rain or wear them under you coat if it s warm and raining(they steam up inside) let them swing on there strap and catch a fencepost, use dusty conditions as it finds its way in along with mould spores, be carfull as those eyepiece bridges can snap(there thin)and they will sometimes with no provication other than a change in temprature and a weak prism retianing spring go "click" and you're alignment is out
i bought a pair and thought they were fab compared to my only other bins at the time(10x25 ruby coated tasco roofs)... dont have or miss either of them now.
if i took one thing from the experience its this, if your going to use the thing buy quality buy once = save money and time in the long run.
cheers mark

I love my Celestron 15x70. The apparent field and the actual field are really nice. These are light enough to hand hold a bit for grab and go. They get a lot of DSOs. Best astro deal I've encountered.
Very good in Yellowstone with animals at twilight. Rest elbows on car roof and survey Hayden valley for wolves and bears. Then the stars come out and ya keep looking.

Celestrons much maligned and beaten horse the Skymaster has brought incalculable joy and pleasure to a multitude since that $49.99 Christmas special offering from Amazon. A "blessing" to the astronomical community.
