A "blessing" to the astronomical community.
???

To paraphrase Abe, you can please some of the people all the time and you can please all the people some of the time but you can't please all the people all the time.

If these are a pleasure for you to use, then more power to you...for me, not so much.

Oh, I am sure there were a number of curses too. But in the large part the purchasers were happy.

Jeez, I spent that much at the Outback last weekend and was thoroughly disappointed. Don't try the 12 oz. NY Strip with pepper sauce.

Celestrons much maligned and beaten horse the Skymaster has brought incalculable joy and pleasure to a multitude since that $49.99 Christmas special offering from Amazon.

Not one person will argue $50 for a pair 15X70s is an exceptional buy. But if you are the one receiving 3 out of 8 pairs out off collimation, returned them for exchange, and found one of the 3 out of collimation yet again, you may feel less euphoric.

I guess there is a limit to Amazon's return and exchange policy as well. More than one reviewer stated Amazon opted to issue full refund instead further lottery.

Ever wonder what happens to all those customer returns? Do they get the warehouse cooling off period and recycled? Or shipped back to China by the boatload? One member estimated Celestron must have shipped 10,000 of these. If that's the case, there must be a lot of them waiting for a collimation job.

One reviewer said he ordered 8 pairs for an astronomy class, returned 3. Perhaps he can conduct classes on binocular collimation with those returns.

You know ERik maybe we should conduct a poll and discover just how many Skymaster purchasers are happy and what percentage are discontented. Of course it won't be scientific but might shed some light on how capable the QC at the factory is.

My first pair I was extremely lucky and received an excellent pair. I had them with me at Okie Tex some years ago and was set up next to Dave Kriege. I had my Fujinon 16X70s with me as well. However 3 lbs. is preferable over 5 for extended use. I don't recall what we were looking at, but handed them over to Mr. Obsession. He exclaimed in surprise these are really great binoculars. I silently agreed having gotten over my surprise many months earlier. I gave that pair away, and was not so lucky on the second pair. I believe it took four pair from Amazon to satisfy my knit picking, but if you are persistent you will prevail. Celestron should hire a number of amateurs to be their QC stateside. It would be well worth the investment. Of course then you wouldn't see them for $49.99.

Captain,

No, a poll with not be necessary for me. There are enough user reviews(166+) on Amazon alone to satisfy that. If you had read my comments about this model thru the years you will know I posted many times that, my own first hand encounter with the Skymaster 15X70 was quite positive. In fact, after spending a good 10-15 min with them at NEAF show a few years ago I could not see enough difference between the Celestron and other brands costing 2 or 3 times more.

I do not judge optics based on low price or country of origin. I love a good buy as much as anyone on CN. I own a pair of Oberwerk 12X60 LW($105) and Burgess 20X80 LW($149) myself. I have had both for over 6 years. The Burgess 20X80 is one of my most used pair for astronomy and long range day time observation. I enjoy using them more than my $400 Japanese 20X80s. 3.6 lbs vs. 5.5 lbs. I have not used the Oberwerk 12X60 for several years except to do comparison tests. They are pretty good for a pair selling for just over $100. But I like using my Leupold 12X50 roof prisms much more. They are 1/2 the size and see slightly dimmer stars than the Oberwerk. The Leupold Roofs also cost 3 X more. I try to make that clear every time I recommend one model over the other...

We all want to get the most for our optical dollars, but I also feel we should present both sides. You said you went thru four pairs before finding a pair to your liking. That data was not mentioned in your earlier posts. Only that they compared very favorably to the Fujinon FMT SX.
I have no way of knowing if the pair I saw at the Celestron stand at NEAF was or was not selected out of 20. Someone else shopping for a pair of 15X70s may not want to play the Skymaster lottery. They may wish to spend $99.98 on another model to improve their odds. Still be quite a bargain!

I Can't speak for anyone else, but I don't think I want to consider the purchase of Any product, knowing my odds of acquiring satisfaction are ~1 in 4. Oh, on second thought, Celestron does have the $25 life time warranty policy. One option would be to purchase several pairs for $50s and rotate them in and out. ;-))

You know the original iPhone can be had now for just 1/6 th of the intro price of June 2007. But how many people would make a purchase if they know one out of four May work to their satisfaction?

ERik D

What's the old saying? "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"

I'm sure Captain enjoys his 15x70's but I would never order the exact same binocular 4 different times in hopes of getting one that works.

My current binoculars were based on one purchase of each. Those that were not ok were returned and not ordered again in hopes of getting a good one...that would be "shame on me".

Maybe with the ones I now have I just got lucky with getting some good ones the first time...who knows. But the same with other products...If I buy a coffe maker, a vacumn, a lawn mover, a snow blower, a televion, etc. and it's not good, I don't go and buy the same model over and over again with the hope that eventually I'll get just the right one that works.

I didn't have to do that with the Nikon SE's and I should not have to do it with other binoculars, regardless of the price.

One bad apple, shame on you, two bad apples, shame.......
