How big a hole?
      #349452 - 02/19/05 01:58 PM

Here's the deal..I have an LX90, which I want to mount on a wooden pier (wife won't go for a concrete pier...we may be moving by years end.) the post is 50 inch's long, and made of solid beech. It will have an Astro Enginnering Owl's Nest on top. How big a hole would you advise..I have suggested 2.5 x 2.5 x 2 feet filled with ready mix, to my wife. She looked at me like I was mad!!!!

Well, the depth of the foundation should be deeper than the frost line in your area. Otherwise the block will eventually get heaved up by the repeated freezing of the ground. 2.5 feet seems a little large. You don't want it to be so large that you will stand on it when using the scope or you will have some vibration issues.

For an LX90--especially if you're going to use ready-mix and it only has to last a year anyway--I would use a much smaller diameter and go deeper. To keep your wife happy, the top of the concrete could end 20 centimeters below the surface. When you move, fill in the hole and who's to know?

So judging to the replies to date. The issue is not weight (ie weight of scope + Owl Nest = 50lbs) but stability.

Comfort, ease of use, and stability. You want the thing to be ROCK solid. When I had the same choice to make, I opted for a good-sized hole and used 900 pounds of concrete to support a custom LeSueur Astropier.
