Pictured here is "my"(I'm just the temporary curator}newly refurbished Tasco 20TE. A cheap plastic painter's dropcloth helps keep the dust off of stuff. With the big scopes it's a monthly vacuum and dust job because one guy can't do it alone. Cloth gets ripped or a nylon finderscope screw gets snapped off , you know the routine by now. I just finished motorizing both roofs on the observatory last month. I had a post about it in Observatories if anyone gives a rat.... I'm really proud of this scope just like many of you who have put so many hours into your restorations. To get a size comparison I'm 6-2 and 300 pounds so this 4-1/4" f/14.8 is a pretty beefy Tasco. Of course I'm prejudiced but I think this was Royal Astro's crowning achievement! They just never came back to full prominance after this model was ended around 1972-1973. The yen just killed the dollar during that time I guess. It really has been a pleasure to "meet" all of you folks here on CN these past few years. Each and everyone of you bar none has contributed richly....I really mean that, because that's just the way it is. It's been a blast and hope it continues. Restoration link. Thanks Mike

Hey Mike!

Great post - spoken from the heart! That scope looks great and already has a very interesting history.

I recommend you go back and edit your above post to put the link in to your restoration thread!

Hey Mike!

You, yourself, are indeed one of the finest contributors to CN! Your 4 1/4" f/15 Tasco entry to the classic scope arena is also one of the finest. Wish I had one of these instruments in my collection. The closest telescopic instrument that I will be able to acquire that comes close to yours in size is a 100mm f/13 Carton, which I plan on building soon. I just have to sell my 90mm f/11 tube and objective I have for sale under the refractor classifieds to help fund the project. Great to see you standing alongside of yours.

Thanks for sharing!

Mel

Hi Mike!

That is one beautiful statement. Yea, we're all lovers of the greats of the past. We are all blessed to be able to actually the chosen few to love and respect these beautiful relics of days gone. Then there's our talent to be able to restore them back to their glory!

Here is a picture of me and my son Zachary with my Cave. I painted it black after seeing Tom Cave's black tube in an article about his observatory back in 2002 or so. The black tube was an experiment and I like it. January marked the 30th year with this scope for me.

Lawrence.....A nice trio indeed. Your son is very lucky, too bad a lot of kids in this world aren't so. Is that a rolloff or just some barriers? Mike

It is a roll off I built about 4 years ago. It is made of very old (100 year+) cypress wood from an older shed. Here is a picture.
Gary, thanks for the welcome. I am glad you had this idea of posting our mugs with our scopes.
Lawrence

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the group, and don't currently own a classic telescope. However, after reading through this forum a little I realize that my first telescope was not the cheap reflector from Sears but indeed a classic!

My dad bought this for my brother and I for Xmas in 1968 - it is responsible for my lifelong desire to look to the skies. The version I had didn't have the constellations drawn on the tube, and the mount and tripod, as I recall, was even less strudy than what this catalog from 1969 shows. Of course, in 1969 Sears was marketing this scope as a 'Moonscope' - it was only 5 months after Apollo 11.

I found this catalog at wishbookweb.com (fun site).
