It is for a focuser motor or a GPS mod.

It's my understanding that it's an RS232 port of some kind. Is that true?

Hi, Jimbo.

It's a communications port but doesn't support RS-232 because it lacks level shifters - runs at +5V and 0V. On the LX90 scopes it's used to connect a port expander module which adds an autoguide port and a focuser control port. Meade never really implemented any accessories for it on the other models on which it appears (ETX, LXD55/75).

Is that what's meant when people talk about the "LX200 command set"?

Hi, Jimbo.

The LX200 Command set is the set of commands implemented in the Classic LX200 and LXD650/750 mounts for remote operation. They are sent to the mount via the normal RS-232 port. Later models (Autostar, Autostar II) recognize these commands plus an expanded set, including some fine motion commands intended for use in serial autoguiding setups.
