Mars - 1st January 2010
      #3532940 - 01/01/10 04:20 AM Attachment (75 downloads)

Mars was a great sight this evening with very steady seeing - in fact the best seeing I've seen in two years :-)

Syrtis Major, Mare Tyrrhenum, Mare Serpentis and Hellas all stood out well in the north of the drawing.

Nilosyrtis in the south of the drawing stood out too, tapering off towards the east. North Polar cap is still clearly white but looks a little duller than a month ago.

Time was 00:05UT - 1st January 2010, 5" F/8 Takahashi refractor with Celestron/Baader Binoviewer at x238, CM=295', seeing IV.

What a nice way to start 2010! Here in Belgium it is all clouds in the sky. Yesterday it was impossible to see the partly eclipsed moon. It was even impossible to find the moon at all!
Happy newyear to you all!

you kicked off the new year in style i've got the same impression of the polar cap/hood being a little less white then before. there has been some dust activity in the region lately.

dweller25,

Impressive sketching. Colors are spot on. That 5" refractor must be giving you amazing views of all the planets.

Frank

Great sketch with excellent details and color as mentioned. I envy your ability to get out and to sketch. Looks like Monday the seeing gets good, just in time for back to work to hit!

Dweller,

An excellent observation of Mars. Syrtis Major is very prominent. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
