Mars - 3rd January 2010
      #3536498 - 01/03/10 04:33 AM Attachment (67 downloads)

Woke up early this morning and had a quick look outside to be greeted to a totally snow covered ground with a beautiful clear sky, Mars was still up and close to the Moon but both were getting low so I quickly dressed and got the Dobsonian set up.

Seeing was poor/average - II/III.

07:00 UT - 03.01.10

Skywatcher 8" F/6 Dobsonian at x200

Orange #21 filter used.

CM= 18'

To the south of the drawing the ploar cap could be seen and above it was Mare Acidalium and Niliacus Lacus.

To the north of the drawing Sinus Meridiani stood out to the left and Mare Erythraeum was obvious but no real detail could be seen.

Hi Dweller

Nice sketch of a morning Mars.
Here in Belgium there's also snow on the ground. I got later out of bed (7.30 UT), but saw also the Moon in a beautiful blue sky. Because I knew Mars was close to the Moon, I took the binoculars and found Mars very easy. After I knew where Mars was, I could see it with the naked eye (7.36 UT). It was 10 minutes before sunrise. I tried again at sunrise (7.46 UT) - so it would be a daytime observation! - but failed to see Mars again with the naked eye Maybe if I had been looking all the time, it would have been possible. Next time better!

Dweller,

An excellent observation of Mars showing Mare Acidalium over the north and Mare Erythraeum over the south. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

I also observed Mars on this date but was fortunate to have moments of better seeing. I will post it soon.

Carlos
