An avalanche of enthusiasm!
I suspect this thread has been so quiet for so long that the usual suspects haven't looked at it in the past couple of days.
Stacy, the site is in a paved parking lot, so it's less than terrific for pitching a tent. But it's fine for self-supporting awnings, tables, stoves, etc. I've had my tent trailer up there. Realistically, I figure that if the weather is good enough for viewing I don't need a tent anyway, & I'd just sleep on a cot beside the truck, or maybe in the truck (Ford Explorer.)

Mike,
I am interested for sure. Two obstacles to overcome, I have to swap a work on-call rotation and weather.
I am a fare weather observer for sure - cold I can take, but skunked by clouds is no fun.
I'll start working on job issue.

Zow! I wish you a painless, rapid recovery, Jackie.
Stacy, Myles, I'm hoping a few others will hop on board, to justify the honey bucket rental and the hassle of getting Forest Svc. approval. If we can't enthuse enough to meet that threshhold, whatever it is, I'd suggest us go-getters head up to about my favorite viewing area, Sunrise Pt. at Mt. Rainier.

THis thread is scary. I avoided it for awhile... I think a new On Topic thread about the specific date and location might attract a few more sky-geeks. JMHO

I just wasn't sure what to say, but I guess I'll present my reservations. A good night up there could be quite spectacular but as late as October is kind of asking a lot I think. Even in July the chances of a good night are not too great and October is just not that likely. And maybe I'm a wimp but a good night would likely be really cold. Also I no longer have a vehicle to sleep in.
Still, if it did end up looking like a good night I might brave it. But otherwise I'd have a hard time working up to a maybe sort of night, as fun as it might be. So I'm hesitant to commit to anything except potential interest.

I agree, Brad, that every week worsens the odds a bit more . . . but, you know we often get good weather into October, and 8-9 is still early. It would surely be cold at night. Also into October more likely to be windy.
As far as starting another thread, I'm not so sure. I wouldn't want to do that without a definite event to promote and so far there isn't a definite event. But maybe it wouldn't hurt to make an announcement in the OSP & TMSP threads & paste links to here . . . there are a few people who look at those but not at this.

Mike,
I have cleared my work on-call issue so I am set.
Either location is nice - Rainier is closer for me. Question, its been several years since I have been to sunrise point parking alot - I don't recall a bathroom - is there one?
I have a weather concern also, but October can spring some nice weather at times. Again, I would likely be a fair weather astronomer on this type of outing. Family might come and sleep in the van like we did at Goldendale in June - or they may release me for a solo trip;)
Curious - anyone thing bubbling for September new moon?

We had good luck at St. Helens in September before and I don't think October is out of the question for good viewing up there.
Just the same, I'd be more likely to drive up to Sunrise than all the way down to St. Helens. But I'd try to make it to St. Helens.
Also, I have a contact at the Forest Service who has sent me 'permission to camp at St. Helens' letters in the past. I'd be happy write for permission or to share my contact info with others.
I also have contact info for the sani-can company that services the Mt. St. Helens area.

There's no toilet at Sunrise Pt. (Editorial -- I really don't understand that -- it's a trailhead for two directions, draining a lot of back country.)
If no more than 5 or 6 of us are interested I'd probably prefer Sunrise.

Well since no one is posting..cuz there is no parties or because the rain is back...I thought I'd throw this out since I'm working in the shop a lot on my new mount.
Here is a pic of the mount drive I am building for the new 4" shaft mount I will be replacing the Cave with.
The Cave is for sale(Not the 12" tube Rings though).
No parties are scheduled for the rest of this year...and it doesn't look like I will be having first light any time soon either. I want to remove the Cave and replace it with the new *MONSTER* mount. finishing up the drive and the saddle is next.
Check out my thread on the subject in the ATM forum.
See ya.

I wish that was true...*K* man. You are the Vulconian perfectionist..I am the *GET BY BOY*....if that.
So esplain to me something. If I have a 110v motor with 3 wires...blue,red,black and the black and red are attached to a large capacitor (One on either side)and the blue is attached to one side of the power lead and the aother side of the power lead is attached to the red wire at the capacitor....... ...can I simply cross the red line wire and the blue and have the motor run in reverse?

They didn't give a you a souvenir tribble for your efforts did they, Kerry? Can I stroke it?
In other news I received the repair parts I needed from Eric Webster last week and worked on Sugaree today. . . only to find that I need one more part. Drat! It's one of the UTA truss clamps, won't hold the pole firmly. I suspect the scope would still hold collimation (7 out of 8 ain't bad?) but I want to replace it ASAP. Who knows? The clouds might just . . . go away.
