Sounds like a plan to me! I have a coworker that was talking about table mtn. I'm thinking I'm going to go to that if I can talk my wife into going with me. I'll keep my eyes open for get togethers around here for sure though!

The big NW events are Table Mtn. Star Party and Oregon Star Party - both are fantastic events. Table Mtn is a little bigger - more vendors and amenities - but OSP easily has the best sky and is a superb event in its own right.
Table has the larger, more active program for kids, making it the preferred destination for families that include children. OTOH, Table suffers from continually worsening light pollution, while the OSP skies are nearly pristine -- the darkest I see on a semi-regular basis. Another distinction that is important to me but a non-issue for many, is that OSP offers more opportunities for camping with some elbow room, while Table is relatively crowded. A glance at the map confirms my experience of 9 - 11 hour one-way drives to OSP from Tacoma, compared to 3 or 4 hours to Table; for me the difference is well worth it but if our kids were still small it would be a tougher decision.

i am going to check out suiattle area this weekend, if the forecast i read is correct. it is a blue zone with a black zone next to it. the black zone is mt baker national forest. i hope to find a good spot out there because, it is less than 40 minutes away from me. accuweather.com says it is supposed to be clear friday and sat in marysville so i am thinking saturday night. i will go early to try to find a place in daylight. if anyone knows the area please let me know if you know a good place.
welcome chris, i am new too. i am trying to get to my first dark sky spot

Looks like the weather will be a bit on the cold/snowy side this week.
Just started snowing here about a few hours ago.

The weather doesn't look too good for you, Sean, but it may clean up by the weekend. Maybe you can turn this into more of a scouting trip. I've camped and backpacked in the summers in that area, but not in the last 20 years. What I don't know is how the winter snow levels match up to road altitudes.
I'd be especially interested in checking out the loop road that runs through the hills between Darrington and Granite Falls, but I suspect it's blocked by snow in the winter. If you can find a good spot around the pass, or around the Monte Cristo trailhead, a mountain should block LP from the western spreadatropolis.
Up the Suiattle river road altitude gain is slow and I'd expect the road to be open for several miles, at least. I'd expect dark skies but limited horizons. There are a couple of camp grounds up there that might be open, and a guy can always set up in the middle of a parking lot.

Been through Darrington quite a few times at night and it is pretty dark, but you'll need to avoid the few neighbors that have bright yard lights. If I remember, there are a few good roads that lead to cell towers in the area that are up on the surrounding hills. ( I used to do cell tower work in the area)

I don't recall exactly where but there was an observing site in the Suiattle area listed on that website of NW observing locations. I've lost the link but I bet one of you has it.
Might have been on this hillside.

I'd consider going to the Table Mount Star Party (TMSP) except for their generator policy (no generators after midnight). Unfortunately my equipment draws more power than I can reliably provide with the two deep-cycle batteries hooked to my Travel Trailer. After two-hours the power level drops below 9 volts which causes my equipment to stop working reliably.
Anyone know if the folks at TMSP ever give out exemptions to their generator restrictions? I'd love to attend the event but they either need to provide me reliable power at night or allow me to run my generator past midnight so I can produce it myself.

It's worth talking to them about a generator exception. They might allow it if they gave you a space near the food vendor. They're allowed to run a generator at night.

the weather and my boss are not cooperating. airplane parts are more important than my scouting, he wants me to work overtime. i will try to head out from work and it will probably just be scouting now. i Googled "dark sky site marysville, wa" and that is what got me pointed in this direction. there was s link to an area good for astronomy, but, the link was broken. so, i decided to try and find it myself. if i find a decent place, you guys will know.

I found the link I was remembering. http://djnorberg.nventure.com/astro/wadarksky.htm
He lists a couple locations in the Suiattle Valley. http://djnorberg.nventure.com/astro/suiattle.html
Some of the links on Dave's site are no longer active but you can dig them up on The Wayback Machine. http://web.archive.org/web/20070506203252/http://www.visualgeography.net/suiattleobserving/

Hello everyone, I have just discovered that the 5.5" Nemoscope has a 5" baby brother in Pennsylvania. Additional details will follow when I learn more over the next few days.
For those not familiar with the Nemoscope, I'll explain everything when I post again.

Last time I was there I was parked by the food area and the shower truck..they run lots of generators and I was allowed to do the same with mine...however you are not set up next to anyone else and so you are pretty much by yourself....

Keith, you, Rob and Kerry could collaborate on design and fabrication of a revolutionary binemoscope! To be mounted on Twin Peaks! I'll write the owner's manual for only a 60% cut!
