Hello All,
First time posting here, I have a question. I have been into astronomy for years now. Started buy just laying out an watching the stars. I bought an ETX-90 EC about a year or two ago, saw a lot of nice objects. Astrophotography is one of my principl interest so I am considering upgrading. I have been looking into the 8" LX90 and the new 8" LX200 GPS. I think I have decided on the LX200. There are too many nice features for the price diffence. I have a tuition bill coming up but what the heck. I was wondering if anyone else had one and had any insights or personal experiene with the LX200 GPS. I would be curious to know how the system works and if it is worth the money. I am also curious about the new UHTC coating. Is is as good as they say it is? It would be another $175, but this might be a scope for a lifetime, so if it is worth it I will just go a little farther into debt.
Thanks for the good advise ~Justin

Justin I have had a Meade LX200GPS UHTC 12 inch for just under a year now. I will say the pros and cons of what I have learned by my experience.
OPTICS with UHTC. The extra price is worth it. My Meade Optics are what I consider as very good. I have no complaints on optics.
I'm not impressed with Meade's drive system very much. I just finish replacing the DEC motor and testing it tonight to verify it fixed the problem. My SCT started bouncing in the vertical axis all of a sudden. It would last for about 2 to three minutes and then quit bouncing. The problem was it keep getting worst everytime I set up the scope. I had to ask really asked hard to get Meade to ship me the motor. They wanted me to send them the scope from Alabama at my cost (Still under Warranty). Anyway, justed tested the scope tonight and everything seems back to normal.
The eyepieces that comes with the scope i.e., the 26mm is a good overall eyepiece but to really make your scope shine buy the Telvue 8mm Radium and the 35mm Panatonic. They are all the difference in the world compared to Meade's. I do have the Meade 14mm UWA and I do like it but it's so heavy. I wouldn't even waste my money on the $99.00 lens kit unless you just want extra lens. I use the 6mm that came with the kit as my plug when I store the scope. You will also need the 9mm luminated reticle eyepiece because you will have to do drive training (VERY IMPORTANT).
Also you will want to purchase the true 2 inch Eyeopener back plate. It really makes a difference when using 2" lens.
You will also want to replace all the cheap screws Meade put on the scope with stainless steel screws. There is plenty of kits you can buy cheap. I live in Alabama and my screws started rusting the first night out.
If you can afford it I would consider the 10" over the 8". There is a article at MAPUG.com That discuss the drive sytem for the 8-10-12 inch Meades. The author stated that the 10" was probably about the best for the drive system because all three of the scopes utilized the same internal parts from what I understood. He stated the 12" was really to heavey for the drive system whereas the 10" was just right.
So, you ask me do I like Meade? Yes, I love my big Bertha but I hate the cheapness of Meade in all the little things, i/e., Backplate, focuser assembly, cheap screws, losey manual and a warranty that really is not what you think a warranty should be. But the OPTICS are great and I have replaced or moded everything I mentioned above. If you have anymore questions I'll be happy to answer them if I can.

Justin,
I'll agree with Charles on some things and disagree on some others.
1. UHTC Yes Agreed. Definetly worth the extra $$
2. I have had no problems with the drive system on my 10". Charles may be correct that the drive system is a little undersized for the 12". But I can tell you that my scope tracks like a champ and I could not ask for more. Now other folks I've heard from also have had some problems with the 8", 10" or 12" LX200GPS scopes with tracking problems some as simple as loose gears, gears not meshed right, drive motors that were not tightened down correctly and as Charles stated motor units that needed replacing. Seems to be a quality control issue at Meade.
3. If your getting an 8" scope the 2" eyeopener II will be a waste of money. The light path in an 8" scope will not allow for any more than a 1.5" light path to reach the eyepiece. But for a 10" or 12" scope the 2" eyeopener II is a great addition.
Optics are top notch.
Screw replacement is a good idea. You can get them at scopestuff.
As to 8" vs 10" ? Bigger is always better Right?

Thanks for clearing that up Craig on the 2"inch eye opener for the 8". Really wasn't thinking about the 8inch verus the 12 inch I have. It did make a noticeable difference when I changed my 12 inch backplate. For these inexperienced eyes that says much.
Justin...Read everything you have time for at MAPUG. That is an excellent site and they have some really great Meade experts there. Like I stated earlier I love my Meade, but she does need constant tuning to stay accurate with pointing and if you are new to astronomy as I was it made for some frustrating nights learning things by trail and error.
I think if I were to buy another I would probably downsize to the 10inch because I do believe that the drive system is just not up to par on the 12 inch. Anyway best of luck.:-) charles
