Mars w/90mm Refractor 1/21/10
      #3574190 - 01/21/10 03:29 AM Attachment (193 downloads)

I had very good conditions so I pulled out one of my small scopes for quick set up and cool down. A rather impromptu session. I don't really know what I was looking at other than this is the so-called boring side of Mars.

Again, the Variable Filter worked best and I was observing at very high magnifications.

Sketch was done with 4H, 2H and 2B pencils. Blending done with stump and fingers.

Since details were rather broad and general, this sketch came together rather quickly after observing for about 45 minutes before sketching.

Best,

Great details there Sol, you've managed to show what features can be seen with a scope of moderate size can do.

Show us more please.

Nice!!! Question...did you put the barlow in the diagonal or vice versa?

Paul & Bryan,

Thanks.

The set up is eyepiece into the VFS and then the VFS into the diagonal. I need a Barlow to acheive focus using the VFS. The VFS unit adds about an inch more distance. The added distance makes my 2.5x Barlow behave like a 3x Barlow. Image also held well using a 9mm eyepiece giving about 303x. Please remember that I take a lot time collimating my scopes as a whole optical system. This includes lens centering and eliminating lens tilt. The focuser and diagonal as well as the 2" to 1.25" adapter. Everything is aligned and checked 3 different ways until everything checks out.

Its the only aspect of equipment I get into with any depth and it can get pretty tedious. Its totally worth it.

Best,

Sol,

Very impressive work. It is always a great pleasure to see the fine detail you are able to pick out and transfer to paper. Bravo.

Frank

What a beautiful sketch. Your quick 45 minutes in an impromptu session is better than my concentrated sessions that last a lot longer. Sure enjoyed the detail.

Sol,

An outstanding observation of Mars made with a quality moderate-aperture instrument. You have recorded an impressive amount of albedo features, especially for the aperture. I have labeled the major albedo features noted. I hope that this helps. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
