Need help - LX200 10" storage case ideas
      #3574485 - 01/21/10 10:05 AM

Hello:

The original packing box for my LX200 10" is starting to really show wear and tear from being lugged around. I would like to find a low cost (less than $100) case.

The foam is still in fine shape, I am just looking for something that will allow me to carry it around and hold up better than the original cardboard box.

Any creative ideas ideas? I have looked at the rolling Stanley Tool Cases. These seem to be big enough for an 8" but not big enough for a 10".

Thanks
Scott

In the CPC room there is a recent post about using a Stanley Tool Case to transport a CPC1100 - if it will fit that it should wrap round a 10" LX200 neatly enough. Check the post to find which model of tool case was used.

I guess I am a bit gun shy about just wrapping a little foam around the OTA. Provided I don't do anything severe (roll it down a hill, smash it with my car, etc.) will a couple inches of foam protect it enough for normal travel bumps?

I use a similar rolling tool chest from Northern Tool. The foam fits inside-- never had a problem moving it around to many different public observing events.

I have measured and the foam from the shipping box will not fit for a 10" scope in the box.

Will the loose foam and blanket approach keep the scope reasonably protected?

Ever since my scope fell out of the back of my wife's truck I have transported it in a surplus military hardside case that I purchased off of the Internet.

The case comes apart in 2 pieces and is held close with 1/4 turn latches. This is a mil-spec case that was used for transporting mobile satellite gound terminals.

The foam only needed minor triming in order to fit in the box. The box had handles and was setup to be a 2 person operation to move it. I installed wheels so one person can easily move it now.

I built a 1/2 inch plywood box to fit around the foam for my 10 inch. Since it weighs a lot I put handles on all four sides and castors on two sides to make it easy to roll on and off of my truck bed. The box is impervious to water as I sealed it and painted it Meade blue.

I know you said under $100, but why not go with the added insurance of a Pelican case? It will have the handles, wheels, and retractable handle. I use one for my 12" LX200R OTA...

Clear skies!

Very sorry! If you are talking about the 10" LX200R with fork mount, then please disregard my suggestion. Pelicans aren't made that big. You'd be looking at JMI's solution for those...

If there is an indoor flea market in your area you might visit it every now and then. I bought a hugh steamer trunk for $25.00 at such a sight and that's where my 10" SCT is put when not in use.

If you have an Army/Navy surplus in your area, you can look into a large case from them.

I picked up one of these for my 10" Classic:
http://www.astrobuffet.com/ab/cases.html
last year - yes, John still had some in stock. I picked it up, so no idea how much shipping would be. Very durable, VERY strong, can attest to being excellent protection.
I have since parted out my 10", so this case is gathering dust. If you want it, I can check into shipping.
regards, scott

Hey Scott,
Can’t corroborate Marcus’s recommendation as posted above as that I do not know “exactly” which cases he is referencing, but I can tell you that Military cases (specific to Communications Equipment) are very substantial.
I had many, many, many Comm cases dropped from the rear of CH-46’s and CH-53 Echos at heights of 10 meters and above with absolutely no damage to the equipment. This is not to say I was not *BLEEP* at the Helo dudes, or was not in agreement of the actual drop procedure…..as is evident.
Marcus’s eval is solid. If it’s a Military case with ¼ turn buckles it’s probably good to go.
Jerry

Thanks Scott

My zip is 45014. Please PM me you asking cost with shipping. I am going to look at one of the Stanley rolling cases again and swing by the Local Army/Navy store.

But, I'd like to get a resolution before spring when I start taking it out more.

Thanks

Scott, this isnt looking too good...

Even though they would be shipping essentially air, UPS charges that "dimensional weight" process.
Using 34"x26"x21", from 02184 to 45014, shipping starts at $68, and this is just the case, no cardboard around it. Want me to continue forward ?

Not at that cost. I'll keep looking around locally.

I to am looking for a case to transport my 10" LX200R in. I am looking for something as compact as possible and preferably as cheap as possible to replace the origional box. I have been looking at Peilcan cases and while they are expensive, they are cheaper than JMI. I really need a compact case as the origional box will only just fit through the door of my car (yes it is a tiny Toyota Echo, but I dont have the option of changing cars just for this), it has to sit on the back seat as it wont even go close to getting through the opening for the trunk. There is a Pelican case, the 1730T, but it would be a really snug fit vertically with the interior height or the case being 12.5" and the LX being 12" wide. Has anyone else had any luck finding an affordable alternative to the JMI case?

You might need an older soft case with foam. That's the only thing that will "give" a bit to get it in and out of a tight space.

I have seen people use a hockey equiptment bag that has wheels. They are big enough I think but they offer no protection due to their soft nature. They are in your price range.
