Mars 1/24/10

CM ~201 degrees.

This is not my first sketch, but it's my first in this forum. The storms cleared enough for me to join in this celebration of the red planet. I observed for about an hour before I started sketching. Clouds rolled in and out the entire time. I used 120-300x. At 300x, I could see some of the faint albedo features on the disk, which was a credit to my 6mm ortho. I ultimately settled on 180x to make the sketch for better contrast and brightness. By the time I started sketching, a light haze settled over me, which dimmed the image and made sketching difficult as my eye fatigued. The sketch took about 1/2 hour to make. The highlight for me was making out some features away from the poles.

I saw those same features a week or so ago at CM=200, nice catch.

Ging-li,

Great Mars sketch. When we can see it this well it really seems like a place to visit.

Frank

Thanks for your kind comments. Mars is the toughest planet for me, but it also offers the most opportunity for growth as an observer. I guess that's why it only comes around once every 2 years. 2018 is gonna be awesome!

Wonderful capture of Mars. Like the details. Be thankful you can get out, I can't buy a night up in Utah. We get your leftover storms so to speak (from the Bay Area (Livermore, Walnut Creek and Turlock until 1993).

I just saw a photo in the imaging forum at the same prime meridian. It turns out there are clouds on the preceding limb. One is hinted at in my sketch. I actually saw another one towards the south but I erased it, not knowing what it was. I need to trust my eye more.

Ging-Li,

An excellent observation of Mars. I have labelled the major albedo features noted. I was observing Mars earlier the same night and will post my observation soon. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
