01.26.10 Mars in Blue Light
      #3586771 - 01/27/10 10:24 AM Attachment (59 downloads)

Hi, I had near excellent conditions last night. I took a queue from Carlos Hernandez's Mars sketches in blue light using a Wratten 38 medium blue filter. I find Carlos' blue light observations to be very interesting to say the least. Besides, I have observed and sketched this side of Mars recently without studying it in blue.

Sketch was done using a 2H pencil, but was mostly done using a dirty blending stump.

Best,

The #38 filter actually rearranges all visible details in different way. Very different view in that albedo features in blue don't appear at all the way they do in IL or with other filters.

For example, the dark features noted surrounding the light center postion of the globe, Martian plains, and are basically "not there" without the #38.

Best,

It is also very challenging.

Sol,

An excellent observation of Mars in blue light (Wratten 38). I try to make blue light (Wratten 80A or 38) observations during my observing sessions to show Martian atmospheric activity visible at the time. You have recorded a good amount of meteorological (cloud) activity over the Martian globe. The center of Mars shows orographic (Mountain-associated) clouds. I have labeled the albedo features visible at this wavelength as well as the approximate locations of the Tharsis volcanoes (Olympus Mons (OM), Ascraeus Mons (AsM), Pavonis Mons )PM), and Arsia Mons ArM)). Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Sol

The details you are capturing in these beautiful sketches is really inspiring to further encourage others observing.

I hope to get to a longer focal ratio telescope before the opposition of Mars passes.

Thanks again for posting your excellent work.

Mark

Nicely done.

I have a couple of coloured filters (Yellow 8 and Red 25A, if I remember right), but I almost never use them. I really should give them another go.

Cheers,
-- Jeff.
