First Astro Sketch M42 new
      #3620660 - 02/12/10 12:16 PM Attachment (62 downloads)

This is my first sketch actually made at the eyepiece. I had to do it quickly because Orion was going out of view behind the house. Star placement is not terribly accurate and proportions are definitely off. I just roughed it in at the eyepiece and then finished it later. Then I put it in Photoshop and got a little carried away. So, this is more of a digital sketch, with some color added, and now actually represents what I see in my "minds eye" when I think of M42. My 12" dob does show a good bit of detail in the nebulosity, and I have a dark sky, but some of the details are definitely embellished a bit.

Amazingly beautiful technique, Jeff! What tools are you using for the digital painting? Brush/Smudge/Dodge/Burn/Feathered Masks? It's really easy for nebulosity to look too blurry, too sharp, or too plastic when painting from scratch in Photoshop or Gimp, but you definitely avoided all of those issues. This is great!

Jeff,

Tremendous! What program and like Jeremy I am interested in how you did your nebulosity.

Jeff,

A beautiful and accurate observation of the Orion Nebula (M42). You have captured the glow of the core and extensions very nicely. I look forward to your future observations. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Oh, that's good. No, I mean it, really good. I particularly like the way you have done the Trapezium area.

Wow, that's high praise, especially coming from all of you guys, who are really the ones who inspired me to give this a try.

As Jeremy guessed, the nebulosity is a combination of the dodge, clone stamp, smudge and blur tools. I used the smudge tool more than the others though. All set with a fairly low percentage opacity and hardness. The trapezium stars I messed with using Jeremy's double star tutorial as a starting point and then used the dodge tool around the whole area to give try and give it a "glow" effect. So it really is heavily manipulated and nothing like the true sketches that I've seen you guys do (which I like a lot more, but can't pull off yet).

Thanks much for the nice comments.

Beautiful!!
Keep up the good work.
The computer rendering looks like a chalk drawing. Really pretty.

This is quite a beautiful sketch!! Great job btw, if you wanted a clinically accurate rendering I suggest taking a photo instead Sketching, IMO, is to not only capture what was seen, but also what was felt and the character of the experience, so a lot more than any photo could do. Your sketch does all this quite excellently and makes me want to visit M42 tonight now.

Thanks Bill. I wish I could visit M42 again tonight as well. Unfortunately our sky isn't cooperating much lately.

And thanks again to everybody for the kind words.

Jeff

Jeff,

Wow! This is a big, beautiful, bright sketch of the Orion nebula. Especially beautiful work on those eyepiece only colors.

Frank
