Mars - 16th February 2010, 19:45UT

8" F/6 Newtonian at x300.

Seeing II - very steady

CM = 178'

Lots of high thin cloud around that I was able to view through and that seemed to help with the view !!

Very definite darker areas in the middle of Mars with lots of brighter regions to the east and west - more subtle than my drawing skills though !!

For the first time ever I managed to see the Hyblaeus extension - more as a difference in brightness between two regions, very subtle indeed.

Considering this is the quiet side of Mars I found a lot to see and draw helped by unusually good seeing.

Congratulations on the Hyblaeus extension. Mars is fading fast!

very nice sketch of the 'dull side of mars' dweller. i think though that you mean Elysium instead of the hyblaeus extension, wich i think is the dark area under and left of syrtis major, and would not have rotated in view by the time of your sketch. elysium is a nice catch, because it looks much dimmer than some time ago imo!

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Kris thanks for the correction but is Elysium a large light area ?? I saw a long dark area.

Yes Elysium is a light area, so perhaps you saw Phlegra or Aetheria? but i leave it to Carlos to make the correct correction

Dweller
Nice to know that the weather was good for Mars observing. I had also a a nice view of the planets "bad side". I can't help you with the Hyblaeus Extension, but I think I saw it two hours later than you (see my post).
Why is your sketch blue? Is it of the high clouds?

Jef - It's a black and white pencil sketch that did not scan well !!!

(I should have said I used a blue filter - LOL )

very good sketch of mars duller side, i often find that a high cloud layer improves my view of Mars and Jupiter, perhaps it is because the air is so still, or it helps reduce the ca in my achro refractor.

Dweller,

An excellent observation of Mars. Elysium is the light area over the center of the disk. At times a cloud is visible over this region which makes it easier to distinguish. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
