Practice Sketch from Magazine Photo
      #3642284 - 02/23/10 09:11 AM Attachment (55 downloads)

Well, I'm too much of a wimp these days to spend enough time at the eyepiece to try to sketch. It is February in Colorado! So, I decided to try a practice sketch from a photo in Astonomy magazine.

Nicely done and there is wisdom in practicing sketching on cold, cloud covered nights.

It works!! We have done a similar thing overseas. We take a picture and set it 10 or 12 feet from our students in a dimly lit room...and have them sketch. It promotes good discussion; people observe how they are capturing things compared to their comrades; and the synergy actually hastens the learning process.

Rick,

Good idea. You can never get in enough practice. It is especially useful for experimenting with different paper and drawing materials before venturing out as the weather improves.

When I taught college and high school astronomy I used to post pictures around the room and have the students sketch them. Posting them on the ceiling across a large room simulates the view through varying sized telescopes!

Excellent sketch of the NGC objects !!! I try to do this as well, It helps my skills - Static sketching...lol. I really enjoy sketching the Widmanstatten pattern of etched iron meteorites. The slight color you used towards the center edge of 3227, adds to its spiral shape !!! Have a good week

I've done this before to try and get the hang of drawing in "negative" mode (for later inverting in photoshop). I've used the Digital Sky Survey website. You can pull up black and white photos of anything in the sky and adjust the FOV from 15' to 60'.

Thanks that sounds like a great idea. I think I'll try it. I need the practice.

Practicing from images/photos is a good way to develop one's skills at astronomical rendering. The limitation to this is that the image will show more detail than the eye can detect, especially with DSO's.

Have Fun!

Carlos
