Astrotrac mount with 8" reflector?
      #3656945 - 03/02/10 05:54 PM

Is it possible to mount a 16 lb. astrograph reflector to an astrotrac mount? Would the mount still be accurate in tracking? Anyone ever tried this?

For the cost of an astrotrac, you could get a used mount that can hold a 40 pound astrograph (if you looked hard enough). Uncle Rod put the kibosh on my thoughts about buying an astrotrac in one paragraph; "The Astrotrac is fine if you want something that's ultra-portable, mainly for shooting through camera lenses. Downchecks? More expensive than a CG5. Less stable. No go-to. Can't be guided."

I think the Astrotrac would collapse under the weight of a 16lb. telescope. It's made for SLR-type cameras.
