If only I had deep enough pockets for this camera.

Large CCD

If I'm not mistaken, this is the same sized chip. Or not.

Looks like it. Someone should buy one of each and send it to me for testing........

Eh, the specs don't look so hot to me. Dark signal and read noise look pretty bad.

Not the same chip.

This is not an astrophoto type camera. Though it is being used to digitize the entire Harvard Observatory's plate collection due to its high speed readout abilities -- which means very high noise for astro type work but is fine for the purpose it is being used. Note it reads out the entire chip in only 0.14 seconds! Compare that to 11.5 for the SBIG camera! I doubt it is cooled, that's not necessary for its intended use. See http://www.photonics.com/Article.aspx?AID=28678
for how it is being used. Checking the Salvador Imaging website I didn't find the camera listed. Maybe a custom camera. In any case not suited for our type of imaging. Even the super expensive SBIG camera which is designed for astro use is cheaper.

Pfft, plebian 16megapixels!

Behold, THIRTY NINE MEGAPIXELS OF IMAGING AWESOMENESS!

You know it's expensive when vendors say call for price

FLI sells that 39 meg chip in their Proline series for $14,200. Note though it is the most insensitive imaging chip around. Mono maxes out at less than 35% quantum efficiency which makes my slow 11k look really good! Color version is only about 16% QE in blue. Also the chip is read out in two halves. If you don't dither a line can be visible. A friend was testing the camera for FLI, I wasn't impressed with the chip. Needs lots and lots of exposure time, even then the images were noisy without a lot of smoothing that cost detail.

Big isn't always better. Look at the bottom line and its real attributes. QE, well depth etc. I am sure that these chips will eventually be sensational and I can't wait til they are.

Dwight,

What would you image with such a tiny chip...?

You need one of these instead:

http://www.e2v.com/news/e2v-ccd-imaging-sensors-are-launched-into-space-onboard-kepler---nasa-s-first-mission-capable-of-finding-earth-size-planets-around-other-stars/

95 MP, low noise, 27um pixels... Building filters might be a challenge though.

Same size but the pixels in SBIG's are smaller...9 vs 11

After the let down about the big CCDs, I will stick with my Philips SPC900.

Yeah, I wouldn't touch it... 12bit ADC, no cooling, high dark current and read noise... I'd take an STX16803 over that any day...

P.s. - The quantum efficiency of that camera was not great.. I'd stick to the more well known imaging chips...

P.P.S - Kodak have a 51mp sensor available that has similar QE to the 39mp camera FLI are offering. Its used in the top of the line Hassleblad H3D Large/Medium format cameras... Quite the beast...
