This does not look like M42, first DSO sketch ever new
      #3660531 - 03/04/10 02:40 PM Attachment (63 downloads)

Hi, two nights ago I got a change to quickly observe m42 from my backyard, just before moonrise with a 152mm F5.9 astroprofesional refractor. Lower limiting magnitude was an estimated 4.2, cold and a bit windy. At 225x I could see easily the E component in the trapezium and spotted F. I tried for the first timme to sketch a DSO. It is not terrific but it is my first one. I will buy softer pencils and improve my technique. It is really M42 although it does not look like it. magnification was about 70x, no filters
man, drawing deep sky is hard
regards
michiel

Michiel,
It looks good to me. You got some good detail. Doing DSO is hard. I have a hard time also, it took me about an hour to sketch M-42 and I'm just starting out to. Practice, Practice, Practice.
Can't wait to see more.:D

Lynn

yes, it does. In fact, just about any observer would recognize it on sight.

A very promising start.

Yes, it looks like M42 to me. DSO sketches are a lot of work.

Yes, definitely M42, which I think is pretty darn hard. I tried it for my first sketch at the eyepiece as well.

Keep it up.

Michiel, congratulations with your first DSO sketch! I hope it's the beginning of a lot more to come.
Your sketch looks nice to me, but a good photo/scan would make it look even better.

Michiel,

You have recorded much detail over the Orion Nebula (M42). I have adjusted your observation (desaturation then adjusting levels and cropping the outer boundaries of the nebula). I hope that you like it. Recording DSO's like the infamous Orion Nebula is not easy. Please continue to practice and you will be happy with your results. I look forward to your future observations.

Carlos

Michiel,

Very nice sketch of M-42. The Orion nebula is a very tough target to begin with but it is also one to go back to each winter and capture more detail each time.

Frank
