One of the disadvantages to sketching (at least for me) is that it usually takes a LOT of time--at the eyepiece and when I come inside. In order to reduce the amount of time I spend sketching at the eyepiece, I quickly sketch the object and then use a digital voice recorder to capture the details for completion at a later time. It works okay, but it's not ideal.
What techniques do you folks use to create your sketches?

So far I haven't gotten the gumption to use a recorder...but I do make notes if I'm struggling with the rendering of a feature at the eyepiece, and I'll touch it up when I get to a comfy bright desk. I also work to touch up some of my blending later, as well as to thoroughly erase stars I've marked with an 'x' (stars I messed up position on, and don't want to screw up an erasure in the dark).

It seems to me we all have very similar meathods I also use a VOC at the scope when I am sketching and it helps a great deal with keeeping hands free.

I stumbled across this post from a while back and thought it was a great idea...I sure know I never thought of using a voice recorder while observing/sketching. But I can certainly see the advantages of using such.

One of my fellow observers uses one as well. The advantage is that he can take 'notes' at a high pace without ruining his night vision.

I've taken the easy way out in sketching: only draw the brightest field stars! This saves a lot of time when you're in a hurry. Sometimes, you need to sketch more stars as the field is just so beautiful. If I had like 50+ clear nights / year... I might go back to my old, slower ways.
And I used a voice recorder years ago when I was starting up the hobby. It was good for general descriptions but after a few cold winter nights in here... the little beast just died one night and been using pencil ever since.

Well I use red light. Though it's quite frustrating because for sketching it has to be moderately bright, and then when I look at eyepiece I have to wait a minute (if I'm trying to see some dim details).
Í can't really imagine how to use voice recorder in order to capture visual image
