Orange C-8 #135 due today!
      #3669709 - 03/09/10 12:19 PM Attachment (171 downloads)

Keep your phalanges intersected, folks! Hopefully, I've got my waterfowl coaxial, and this C-8 will arrive this morning via UPS undamaged!

It still ain't arrove...

Here's the business end. Interesting missing linky kind of thing?

Note also that the OTA has been out of the forks, since it's in upside down (slow mo and lock lever facing focuser, but finder on bottom and focus knob on left).

Okay, it's done arrove!

Thankfully, it was well packed in bags with foam inside them surrounding it. Box was a little beat, but not too bad. It was a decent thickness cardboard, really old, though, and taped up really well.

Now, before you scroll down and look at this thing, be forewarned!

This is one BUTT UGLY CELESTRON! I think this is the ugliest C-8 I've ever seen!

But it's got GOOD BONES. I'm going to have to strip all the paint off and start over, but I like it!

Points of note in the pic above:

The "clean" orange spot at upper left? That was right under where the camera adapter knob is. So, it's been apart and the tube put back together in a different orientation from storebought.

Bright orange on left, above pic, = shadow behind fork attachment. Tube seam was probably centered on the cell, originally. (but I wouldn't have thought these would have had seams?)

If I ever build an observatory around this thing, I promise to name it "The Kbew Tinky Memorial Observatory!" (it actually looks like the label is partly missing before the "name" kbew, but I can't think of what common or uncommon name ends in kbew!).

Corrector and primary. Note penciled arrow at about 10:00 o'clock. This doesn't quite line up with "up" if the tube were rotated to put the orange shadows back under their respective shadowcasters, but perhaps it's close?

The corrector has been cleaned, and there's a run about an inch long on the inside from water (I hope) getting behind it. The front appears scratch-free, though, so I'm hoping it was cleaned carefully. The inside has a handful of flecks on it that look like tiny paint chips or something. The primary is clean, but there's a hint of haze in a couple of places and maybe a pinhole or two. Overall, though, nothing I'd do anything about. It's a lot better than the coatings on my 1974 Cave 8", and that performs fine.

Tim,
That's great that it arrived in one piece ! Before you start stripping paint off, try wiping it down with a bit of solvent. I couple of guys in my club have very old C-8 with the rubberized orange "paint" and they were able to clean up the finish pretty nicely. Then they used a little baby power to take remove the little bit of stickiness in the paint from the slovent wipe down.
See you at the Delmarva Mirror Making Class next weekend Your 10" blank is all ready for you to make it into a Classic.

- Dave

Hi guys!

Okay, a couple more pics. i'm shooting indoors, so the light's not great and a few of these came out blurred the first time around.

It's really WINDY today! I think the SUN is twinkling, even!

Plug: Were these 12-volt in? I don't have the cord.

Latitude adjuster. Is this thing original? It looks as though it would be hard to adjust with the scope on the wedge. The wingbolts sure don't look original. What was?

Paint detail.

There's this sand texture stuff on the tube and on the machined surfaces of the cell. ...to make it all look even?
I'll try cleaning it, but the specks you see are places where sandy texture thingys have worn off, showing aluminum through.

Tim,
It not 12 volts but 110AC. The plug is old style two spade Jones plug. I have a couple and if I remember I'll bring one to mirror making class for you.

RA slow mo question.

It appears to be some sort of friction gizmo, not a spur gear? Because it slips a lot. ...either that or most of the teeth are stripped off!

In the unlikely event that the wind dies down enough to go outside tonight, I'll take ol' Tinky-poo out and see if it's collimated!
