I do like the color scheme, though!

Tim, you are truly an inspiration to me as I struggle with the notorious salt-encrusted C8!

We're. Bbqing for mothers day, so I'll have to scope out the collimation one evening this week. I'm heading to sw Utah Friday to get ready for the eclipse, but I don't think I'll bring Tinky.

Great documentation of a restoration of a classic by a gentleman of renaissance character.

IMHO, like them or not early C8's significantly changed amateur astronomy!

I will use Tinky as a benchmark for S/N 31's appearance.

This is a great forum!! Thanks All!

Bill

I forgot something...

The corrector cell wasn't painted on the inside, originally. This might have been to enable the corrector retaining ring to come off easily. The cell is anodized black under the paint.

I suspect I'll need to fiddle with corrector orientation, so if I bugger the paint getting the ring out, I could strip it and repaint it, as I should have enough of the dark anthracite and plenty of the alsa clear.

Tim,
Be careful! You want to make sure the corrector retaining ring has room to expand. On the older ones, it is Al, the newer ones plastic. I got mine too tight and had no play due to paint thickness and my corrector developed a radial crack.
Make sure you have no paint on the edge of the ring, it won't be noticed and is not in the optical path! You should be able to freely rotate the ring when placed on top of the corrector. If you can't you're too tight!
I would not put the alsa clear on the inside of the cell!

Brian

Brian:

Yeah, I need to take the paint off the inside of the cell. The corrector has plenty of room inside the cell, as in addition to the cork or paper rings in front and behind it, it had 3 cork spacers 120 degrees apart from one another.

One thing that I kinda worry about is not using glue to keep the cell and corrector in place. Even though they fit snugly now, do you think that later, after temperature changes, that there's a chance they could get loose and fall out?

My problem wasn't space around the corrector, it was space around the retaining ring and possibly too tight of screws. The ring wanted to expand/contract but had no ability to do so. Corrector was well cushioned by cork spacers and had room to easily rotate.
Just lightly tighten the screws on the retainer, just enough to hold it.
Brian

Honestly, I think I'm going to have a devil of a time getting the corrector cell off again. It took a fair amount of squeezing with the clamp back and forth from one side to the other, to get it in place.

But when I do get it out to test the collimation, I'll plan on removing the corrector and see if I can take the cell off - probably with the clamp but with the jaws reversed so it pushes rather than pulls.

-Tim.

Hi Brian:

When I put the ring in, I ran the screws in hand snug, then backed them all of about a half turn. I may have time tonight to fiddle with it. At the very least, I'll make sure the ring isn't squeezing the corrector. I'll also back the screws off enough to see if I can rotate the corrector without taking off the ring.

-Tim.

That's pretty far north. Is that still in the path of "totality", annularity, or whatever? Edit: Just checked ma map, looks like it would be annular all the way to Fillmore, or beyond.

Yeah, Milford isn't on the centerline, but in the annularity zone. I'm planning on watching from a stretch of Hwy 56 west of Cedar that falls right on the centerline for about 15 miles, so I can move out from under a cloud if need be.

Re: Tinky does Saturn! new [Re: tim53]

Hi all:

I set up Tinky tonight to adjust the collimation and see how it does on Saturn. The seeing wasn't great, but it should have looked better than it did. So, while I got everything pretty close to concentric, I bet that I still need to rotate the corrector and/or the secondary. I've never taken the secondary out of the corrector, so I don't know what to expect there. Any pointers?

Since the scope had been apart before I got it, and the Corrector and the tube were rotated at odd angles with respect to the cell and primary, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the secondary and corrector weren't oriented right. In fact, I expect they aren't oriented.

Anyway, Saturn was soft and it wasn't all seeing, or didn't feel like it was. I have to work tomorrow, or I'd have set up the 1975 C-8, which I know has superb optics, to do a real time comparison.

Anyway, it still looks good to look at, even in the dark!
