thanks Dave! That'd be great!

I've fiddled with the focus knob a bit. Very stiff and gritty feel, like the grease is hardened.

-Tim.

More paint detail. I sit corrected. The specks aren't always holes in the paint when they're bright. They're actually bright specks themselves!

Visual back detail. I was told by someone that this was a transitional phase between an earlier helical focuser (that would be neat!) and the focus knob we all know and love today. This black adapter appears to be anodized aluminum, but it has the specks too! How did they do that? Here, they're not 3-D, but just bare aluminum, I think...

More of the visual back. That thing on the edge that looks like a label? Appears to have been where a label was under the kbew Tinky 1976 label. Hard to read, but I will try at some point.

The 1 1/4" visual back looks modern, though it says "Japan" instead of China or Taiwan on it. (I can't remember but think the one that I bought for my 9.25" says Taiwan).

Tim,

I'm glad to see where this C-8 ended up at. I was bidding on it to. Glad to see that it went to someone who knows about telescopes. Keep us updated on the work.

Will do!

First thing I think I'll try is cleaning it up with some solvent. Think mineral spirits would be a good starting point? I don't want to risk damaging the paint if it's salvageble underneath the grime.

Then, probably regreasing the baffle tube would be a good next thing.

It's really windy, still, so I don't plan on taking it outdoors tonight. And tomorrow night I'll be getting ready for the mirror class. Flying out Thursday morning.

-Tim.

Hi Tim,

Great score! I was eying that up too.

I know this is going to sound silly but......there is silicon spray, used to lubricate aluminum window panes, that I have used to get grime off. I first spray with the silicon and rub with a cloth, after all the grime is off, then I spray with a foaming window cleaner. It works well for me.

Cheers,

You can also try dish soap, 409 and non-abrasive hand cleaner to get the gunk off of Mr. Tinky.

He's a nice find, and should restore well!

If memory serves me correctly, without pulling out my old Sky & Telescopes, the v-shaped base that the instrument is on was depicted in Celestrons old advertisements in the early 70"s that were on the back cover of S&T.
Now is the time to place bets, hmmm..., as to when you will complete the restoration. I am certain that everyone is waiting for that day. Perhasp you can keep sending updates as you restoration proceeds.
Enjoy the telescope.

Dish soap goes a long way. If you look at my post labeled Restoration Project, that is just with dishsoap. I also find that a little gizmo called a Sonic Scrubber helps a lot. You can find it in most grocery stores in the cleaning isle. Basiclly it is a handheld scrub brush with a battery driven vibrating head. I use the attachment with what looks like tooth brush bristles.

You know, that label - KBEW - made me think right off of part of a ham radio call sign. A lot of ham operators labeled there stuff with a call sign and nickname.
The only reference to kbew I can find is radio station KBEW - AM owned by a Paul Hedberg in MN back in 76

Greg:

Interesting! I'm going to try to read the label info that shows up under this labelmaker label, and see if I can make any sense of that. ...probably going to be next week before I can get to it, though.

Well, the only results for "tinky" that I found via a google search weren't all that flattering.

Best was nickname for Tinkerbell. Worst was... never mind!

Glad for you that it arrived safe Tim. You might try Tuff Stuff, It's a automotive airasol cleaner, works great on viynl upolstry, not too harsh. I like Windex but I would watch out if you have that rubberized early paint.

That black plate on the back of the rear cell is interesting, that is where the concentric focuser would mount on the very first orange C8. They only made 125 concentric focus C8's before deciding it was to expensive to manufacture. Yours must of been using up the last of that model before the one we know today went into production.

Robert

I wonder how many of these, past number 125, had this transitional backplate on them? At least 10, of course!

There's also no boss in the cell casting for the focuser knob - the black thingy is screwed on (and the holes for the screws are too big, as the countersinks cut into the outside edge).
