Good lord! I really didn't have high hopes for a definitive answer on the colors, but I wasn't expecting to hear that the table-top support wasn't original!
Quote:
Unfortunately we do not have the information you need. However, by looking at the photo we can see that it is the "Standard" Celestron orange. You can easily go to a paint store and with a small sample or part of the scope that has not faded, they can match the paint. What is interesting is the table top mount or legs. They do not seem to be original.
Thank you

Tim, There are a couple of ads in the old Sky and Tel that show your table top legs, don't worry they are original. Your running into the same problem I did 10 years ago when I tried to get information about my C-8 that is of the same age and has a serial number like your that is close to #100. The problem is that there is no one left at Celestron from the very early days that has any knowlegde of these very first units. By the way did the Jones plug I gave you fit the drive base ?

Did you guys see the apparently brand new old classic orange C-8 on Ebay. It looks like it was bought in the late 70s and never used or taken out of its packaging. Even the trunk looks new. Wow it is a beauty.

yes, the plug fits! But the pin, or rivet that sticks out on the side keeps it from going in all the way. It also falls out easily. Can the pin be cut off? Or hammered in?

Tim,
The pin on the Jones plug is only partial twisted into place because it can be difficult to take out once it's is fully seated. It almost a one shot deal once you get all the way in and you'll need to take out to get the cover off to wire the power cord into the plug. You need to rotate the pin to get it out or fully seat it because the end of the pin has coarse "twist" type threads that bite into the plastic body of the plug.

Tim, I'm pretty sure I found the paint that was used on the yours and my clubs very old C-8. 3M sold the rights to the Suede finish paint and the paint is now called Nextel. Here is a link http://www.eldeco.be/Nextel.htm They sell what looks like the same orange and tan that were used on our 'scopes. Now to find someone who sells the stuff in the USA and that we don't have to buy 5 gals of it.

WOW! Thanks for finding that before I strip all the paint off mine and use something "close, but cigarless". I may still work on the scope this weekend a bit, as I'll have some time, but I'll concentrate on cleaning up dried grease/relubing and collimation so I can try it out!

http://gatewaycoatingsandsupply.com/story.asp?ID=3 says that the minimum quantity they sell is a gallon.
Maybe I could round up all the sand-cast orange tube C-5's, 8's and 14's and paint them all at one time?

This is interesting...
A test from 1983 at Fermilab of reflectivity of various black paints. Nextel Suede is blacker than Krylon ultra flat black!
Guess I'll need a gallon of that, too!

It's expensive! A guy who used it to paint the glareshield in his homebuilt airplane says on his website "For a gallon of the Nextel Suede, plus a gallon of primer, plus reducers, accelerators, and shipping, our order topped out at $300."

Wow, if you find it lower, I have a C-8 tube I would love to get coated with the original paint style, but the price mentioned is way too high. Brian

I'm finding all kinds of links stating that Nextel Suede is used in airplane cockpits and on car dashboards. But still no retail sources popping up. I'll keep looking.
And now that I think about it, I used to have a Toyota Previa (Jelly bean van) that had a big wide dashboard that I thought would have a problem with glare because the windshield was so big and sloping over it. The dash was dark brown, and had a suede feel to it, so it probably was this kind of finish.
If it's used so much, one would think it ought to be available for refinishing somewhere!

Wow, my hope of ever finding this stuff in quantities and prices appropriate to refinishing a single telescope is starting to fade. After 10 pages of google search results, I'm starting to see the same links many times.
Guess I'll get going on the days activities and hope that I get a response to my query from the US distributor next week.
I suppose the good news is that it appears from what I've read that other applications of this paint in the 70's had the same problem with discoloration over time, but that the current paint is much more durable. It's even used on desks and audio equipment, and the flat black is used on high-end and even spacecraft optical applications.

Started working on the scope today.
First thing I did was to put the OTA in the forks the RIGHT way - it drove me nuts that the finder was on the bottom when the RA slo mo knob was facing the observer!
Next thing I did was to look at the alignment of components. Well, it ain't, plain and simple.
note that the corrector cell mounting holes for accessories aren't aligned with the top of the mirror cell, so I couldn't put a dovetail plate on if I wanted to:

Next thing I did was to take the corrector out. Before getting all the screws out, though, I shot this pic, showing faint penciled on arrows on the secondary holder and the retainer ring for the corrector. Natch, they're not aligned at present!

So, Here's the corrector and cell off the OTA. the cell came off with a moderate twist, so it was just pressed in place:
