Celestron CG-5 or Meade LXD75 for Astrophotography
      #3675945 - 03/12/10 12:23 AM

The Celestron CG-5 and the Meade LXD75 seem to be the only two quality mounts I can find(for moderate sized scopes) under $700 that include the GOTO system.

Looking for opinions.
Which of these would be better for Astrophotography?
Which has the more accurate tracking system?

This is a question that's very similar to one I asked in the astrophotography section. I'm hoping to get input on this as well.

What size scope are you looking to use?

Just found this thread you may want to check out. Down lower on first page is a comparison of the two mounts you ask about.

I'm looking to use nothing bigger than an 80mm refractor, so I'm thinking I don't need a large mount. I'm so nervous about over or under spending on the mount. I want it to work well, but I'm not in a great position to waste money

they're essentially the same thing. neither is great by any standards. both will take patience and care to get them going well. but it obviously can be done. which ever you can find cheaper at the time i would get.

The main advantage to the CG5 is the All Star Polar Alignment routine. It will easily save you 45 minutes to an hour in setup time...no drift alignment required.

As far as which mount will provide better tracking it's hard to say. My CG5-GT has a PE of about +/- 20 arc seconds. I haven't seen any data on the LXD75.
