I have used a small plastic flashlite the 9 volt kind to power some of my stuff..verry light weight and runs the fan for days..also nice to have the on off switch..just velcro it to the tail end of the scope..

So I finally got everything worked out with the camera, and I even got it to work well at f/3. It turns out that my SAC focal reducer's spacer doesn't have working threads, but putting a T-thread to 1.25" adapter over it holds it in place on a C-mount to T-thread adapter. The same night I fixed this issue I ran into an even bigger problem; it turns out that my apartment complex has a curfew on all residents. They didn't tell me anything about this before I moved in a few weeks ago, even when I specifically asked if I would be allowed to use my telescope on the sidewalk outside my apartment. When I was using it the other night though a security guard approached me and informed me that I would not be allowed to do this again due to the curfew. He allowed me to finish my observing that night as I had already set everything up, but the apartment management is not going to allow me to use my telescope again unless it's "work related." It seems I went to the trouble of being able to observe from light polluted skies for nothing. I guess I can still use the camera at public viewings elsewhere, but in general it's going to get a lot less use than I planned, as is my telescope. With that said, here's a link to a youtube video of what might well be the final deep sky object I see from this "home" (feels more like a prison now) M82:

ps- you don't want the actual "Sens Up" function turned on - that means you have set the camera to automatic and you don't want that- the sense up that you want to use is set in the Shutter setting - sorry I know it is confusing.

I was noticing that whenever I used the camera with the manual shutter setting and 512x integration, the gain setting appears to be useless. When I turn gain on I can use the sens-up function set to maximum and the automatic selection usually defaults to either 256x or 512x from there. It would be nice though to force it to go the full 512x when I want it to. The only other issue for me, if there is one, is that SSNR seems to deplete the color saturation entirely on dim objects. That's probably fine since it seems like the chromatic noise is pretty bad but the luminance noise is acceptable. Was I doing something wrong there, or is automatic gain control never really available when you use the manual lens setting? Without the gain I usually don't see anything, even at 512x.

Sounds like your settings are not quite right:

Lens: Manual
Exposure: Shutter > Manual> x512
AGC: High
Brightness I leave in the middle to start
White Bal: ATW to start- if you have removed your filter you will need to do a manual balance
SSDR: I leave on and set to level 3 or 5- I had the same problem with not picking up color sometimes until I did this. You may want to try different settings depending on what you are viewing.
SSNR: On : I leave it on about 25- another one you can change depending on what you are viewing
Day/Night: Color

Under the "Special" sub menu
Image Adjust (this is where you get to the digital zoom - but leave it off at first)
Sharpness : ON- Level in the middle
Monitor: I use a LCD so I set this to LCD- but you may want to play with the manual settings.

Hope this helps-

You should not be able to use the sens-up function when the shutter is in Manual- you don't want to use the sens-up function.

In the "Astro Video Image Gallery" thread in this forum on the current last page of the thread (page 23) the screen caps I posted from GregW sesion on Night Skies Network are from this camera. Sorry I am at work and don't have any on this computer.

The capture device is for a computer- I use the DVD player for visual use only, either close to the scope for focusing or if I don't plan on capturing or broadcasting. I use my 17" laptop with capture device for recording and broadcasting.

My portable DVD player came with an RCA adapter- has a mini-jack on one side that plugs into the dvd player and RCA jacks on the other side that I use for the camera.

If you want to use a VCR and TV you would have BNC to RCA on the back of the camera with RCA cable going to RCA-in on the back of the VCR and then VCR hooked up to the TV normally- problem with this is you need enough RCA cable to get to where your VCR/TV are, and you need to be able to see the screen when you make adjustments/focus the scope or make camera setting changes.

scout, i have a 9" portable tv, vcr combo that i purchased at walmart a long time age and it works real well. it has video and audio ins in front and no outs in back. so what ill do is record the video on tape with the 9" then put the tape in my vcr that's hooked to one of my tvs inside and use the capture device that i bought online at walmart to transfer to my computer. i captured a nice shot for m3 last night 1-2 minutes. i need some work on the focus. i have a question about the focal reducer, where did you get yours and what kind and cost. thanks, don

I have a few different reducers- sct .33 and .63 and a generic 2" .5x- depends on the scope I am using. Most folks here use the MFR Reducers from Rock Mallin and it seems liek a great product. but I have not used one yet.

What kind of scope are you using?

had a chance the stay up late and see what i can do with m 13 and the o ring. first time I've used my orion 120 st. m 13 came in with a WOW!!! I'm learning as i go. I've had other low priced video cameras with no luck trying to get something out of them and twice the price of this one. if one wants to get into video astronomy, this is the camera to buy. im very happy with it and no cooling yet. what i did learn tonight is that focusing is one of the keys to getting good results. once i study up on this capture device i bought ill post some photos. thanks, don

here is a photo of a monitor ( 19" lcd tv) and recorder i put together. i already had the dvd recorder and it was just setting in the closet. when i had direct tv installed and a dvr, i put the dvd recorder up. so instead of using my 9" tv vcr combo, then having to use a video capture device, then trasfer to a cd, i record directly to a cd. ive tested it out using a lens on my sdc 435 and scanning around the house while recording and it worked great! now im waiting for the clouds to go away. thats a hit and a miss here in okie land. don
