I This is a very, VERY bright galaxy with direct vision and for its size with a very bright core. It is long, thin and looks like a sliver of light in the eyepiece, almost like a needle. Averted vision increases the diffusion but not a lot of detail comes with that.

I won't bore anyone with more from Friday's session, I'll just upload them to my blog later in the week if time and schedule allows (good nights coming Monday, and Tuesday with Tuesday being very good same with next Friday and Saturday). I'd love to get back logged on putting stuff up, it means I'm observing again and boy am I ready.

Nice job Jay. You've captured what I call the "distant galaxy glow" very well. I'm working on it, but can't touch this.

Jay

Another beautiful rendering by you of a remote galaxy It seems to have an amazing fluctuation on my screen as I view it at varying angles. Is that something you can add a threshold to in the digital creation with GIMP?

I'll look forward to seeing your further observations, excellent renderings and fine information.

Thanks for sharing this,

Mark

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. It was one of my favorite object of the night. Mark, one of the things I like about the digital rendering of the sketch is the ability to create that threshold as you put the layer of color one on top of the other. On galaxies I have found that I put a faint color of gray to dark gray and that is what gives the threshold. The next layers are brighter until I get to the core level. Blurring the galaxy helps to create the different view as you move the screen back and forth (works great on a laptop).

I got 15 more Herschel 400's last night and sketched 7 of them (about 25 to 30 minutes on average per sketch, two took about 45 minutes or so). I'm starting to get my backlog of objects and the scope is cooling in the backyard for a couple of hours of observing. Hopefully Friday and/or Saturday have good weather.

Jay (in Utah),

Many thanks for posting your observation and sketch of this fine galaxy. When I saw this, I immediately pulled out my observing logs, as your observations seemed warmly familiar. Indeed, I too have observed this interesting galaxy back on the 2nd of May, 2005. At the time I observed from a semi-rural site (NELM around 5.5, maybe 6.0 at zenith) and used my 150mm achromat refractor.

My own notes greatly match what you recorded of this fine object. I worked the galaxy for an hour or so and caught a bit of irregularity in the core region. To me, the galaxy seems more blunt to the south and has a subtle "notch" swooshing into the core from the west. I wonder whether anyone else can confirm (or deny!) these observations?

NGC 2683 is a great galaxy and should put on a fine show from most suburban or dark skies, even if using a much smaller scope. I'll need to see if I can nab it under city skies with a smaller scope, but am not holding my breath on that one!

Jay,

An excellent observation of NGC 2683 in Lynx. This is an interesting nearly edge-on galaxy. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Pretty sketch and galaxy. It's on my list.
