M46 - cluster with surprise new

That was not so easy thing to mark all those cluster members. I'm sure I missed some But... job done

M46 - open cluster in Puppis with planetary nebula NGC 2438 projected on to it:

Simas, incredible! I want to sketch M46, but am aware capturing all those stars will be tedious.

Did you use any filters to bring out the planetary? I just noticed you said the planetary was superimposed. Does that mean you sketched it separately and added it later to the overall cluster?

S1mas,

This is a beautiful capture of this deep sky pair.
The planetary can at times be a little difficult but as you have shown it is pretty large and a narrow band filter really brings it out very well. Great job.

Frank

Thanks guys
Kenneth - I was not using any filter for this nebula, it easy can be seen from such dark skies I observed that night. I just sketched all of that in one breath. Its hard to begin, when you see all that amount of stars But all you need to do, just put first dot on...

Simas, your sketch interested me partly because I was observing M46 Tuesday night local (Wednesday 10 March 03:00 UT). My skies are not particularly dark -- orange on CSC dark sky meter. But, transparency was very good that night (NELM = 4-5). I easily saw the planetary using averted vision, no filter. What I saw was very similar to your sketch. Hopefully I can attempt to sketch it Friday night.

Simas,

An excellent observation of M46 in Puppis and the planetary nebula NGC 2438 within it. You have recorded these objects very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Great sketch. I managed to head out of town last week and had a look at M46 myself - from my garden no planetary but from the new spot the PN was just visible with averted vision and a little sharper with OIII filter.

The downside is "so many stars to sketch" :-)

Wise advice! And I followed it! I did my first DSO sketch last Friday night. Not M46, yet. I started with the Christmas Tree Cluster in Monoceros. I am satisfied with it, for a first sketch. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a scanner, so I can't share it with you at this time. I hope to do M46, M48, and the Tau CMaj cluster within the next couple weeks.

Congratulations Kenneth

You could image it with digital camera and pass it to your computer for some processing now

I hope to see your sketches soon.

Lovely sketch, you really did capture it's appearance at the eyepiece well.
