Moon and Pleiades
      #3694840 - 03/21/10 12:09 AM Attachment (48 downloads)

I was fortunate to have observed the close passage of the Waxing Crescent Moon ~5 days old) to the beautiful open cluster the Pleaides (M45) in Taurus on March 21, 2010 (00:30-02:30 U.T.) over my western horizon. I made a series of observation using my Oberwerk 11 x 56 mm binoculars. It was quite a sight to observe the Crescent Moon so close to the Pleiades. I watched the Moon float to the south of the cluster as it came as close as 3 arc-minutes to Merope (4.12m) at 01;30 U.T. I hope that others were able to view this event as well.

The first image below was made at 00:30 U.T. All digital images were produced in Pixelmator.

Carlos,

Just got in from my dark site. I saw this first thing this evening also and it was stunning. Your sketches nail it and save me from posting my later here! An excellent job as always.

Thank you all for your very kind compliments on Moon and Pleiades series of observations. It was fantastic to see the Moon and the Pleiades in the same field and see the Moon moving across it. I am glad that others were able to view the event as well.

Carlos,

A truly awesome sequence of drawings. The way you've rendered the sunlit and earthlit portions of the Moon is striking. The Seven Sisters never looked better. What a sight! Thanks for bringing it down to Earth and sharing it with us.

Michael,

Thank you for the compliment on my Moon and Pleiades conjunction series. It was a striking sight to watch the Moon close to the seven sisters. Your Mars and Saturn observations were excellent as well. The best of luck in your own observations.

Lynn,

Thank you for the compliment on Moon and Pleiades series. It would be interesting to make the observations into a short movie. I will look into it. The best of luck in your own observations.
