NGC 5128 - Centaurus A galaxy
      #3695842 - 03/21/10 02:57 PM Attachment (56 downloads)

Yesterday I came back from a vacation on the island of La Palma, one of the best places to observe within reasonable travel distance from my light polluted home country. On one of the nights I've observed on top of the mountain, a few miles from the large GranTeCan 10.4 meter telescope. It was an hour drive from where I stayed that week, but an expierence I will never forget. Zodiacal light, Gegenschein, structures in the winter Milky Way. Simply unbelievable!

One of the finest objects that night was NGC 5128, The Centaurus A galaxy. Not visible from my home, but reasonably high in the La Palma sky. I've made a little sketch through my 250mm airline travel Dobsonian.

very nice Roel, is that a big dustlane in front of the galaxy? i'm not good at deepsky objects.

i wouldn't call a 250mm traveldob 'little'

Roel,

Beautiful sketch of Centaurus A (aka the Hamburger Galaxy, Kris ). I try for it every April or May but it never gets above 9° at my location so the view is dim at best. While you were in La Palma, did you also see Omega Centauri, which is about 5° south of Centaurus A?

Roel,

An outstanding observation of the Centaurus A Galaxy (NGC 5128). You have captured the appearance of this lenticular galaxy (a mixture of an elliptical and a spiral galaxy). I have seen this object from South Florida in a 20-inch (52-cm) Dobsonian. The dark central bar is prominent as you have rendered. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Lovely sketch! Roque de los Muchachos sure brings back memories. I spent 2 weeks observing from La Palma back in 2008, two nights from the NOT yard. It is a dark place but without ground fog... the light domes are still very obvious but the extra altitude, low humidity and one of the world's best seeing conditions make up for it I suppose.

/Jake

Thanx everyone!

Yes, I did see Omega Centauri that same night (it's right below 5128)! It was the first time I ever saw it, because I never travelled that far south before. The view of it was stunning! Sketching however seemed impossible. Thousands and thousands of stars: dazzling!
