Sketches made recently with my 4" Polarex
      #3700367 - 03/23/10 04:15 PM Attachment (66 downloads)

These are a few sketches I've made through my 4" Polarex. I've posted them also on the sketching forum, but I thought you guys might like to know how centain objects look trough this telescope.

First one is a sketch of Mars (March the 1st), it was a tiny ball when I sketched it, but quite a bit of detail was visible. Left is my "creation", right the simulation by Ikemura:

Next one is the Moon crater Hercules. I made this sketch yesterday, when the Moon was pretty high in the sky and the seeing was excellent. I could push the magnification up to 300x. The great objective had no trouble with this!

Last one is a partly finished sketch of Archimedes, made tonight. My plan was to sketch the larger region around Archimedes, Aristillus and Autolycus, but high clouds made the view so foggy that at one point sketching was no longer possible. Only part of Archimedes was finished....

Amazing what the human eye can detect with careful study. Rivals even the best digital imagery. Thanks for posting.

Roel, Very well done Artisan!
I agree with Bill.
I'm terrible at sketching, but I see much more by taking the time to practice.
A mentor explained, planetary and lunar observations are behooved by patience and pencil.
Thanks again for sharing!

Really nice work Roel. Those are good enough to frame and mount on the wall. You have artistic skills, that's for sure.

Wonderful! It's amazing what can be done with a 4-inch telescope. Even my lowly 60mm Unitron reveals lots of crisp detail on the moon. Was out night before last observing the Alpes/Alpine Valley, Montes Teneriffe, and the Apennines. Mons Pico stood out in incredible relief. Faint streaks of light were illuminating the floor of Ptolemaeus. Beautiful! Wish I could reproduce it in a sketch as lovely as these.

Thanks! Tom

When you say sketch (sorry, I'm a newb) do you mean that you did these by your own hand?
