Thanks everybody. I wish I could image more often but I have to get up pretty early for work and it seems like the seeing is always lousy on the weekends.

Gerald - I use a humble Phillips SPC900NC webcam. I think I'm ready to take the next step up and get a color Flea3. The frame rate on the SPC900NC is just too limiting especially with the generally poor seeing conditions here in NC. Jump back a page or two in this thread and you'll see my setup.

Steve - I am pushing the air as I feel cooling the mirror is most important. And I think this also does a better job of equalizing temperature in the entire tube and reducing tube currents. Depending on the difference of mirror temp to ambient temp when I start there is a noticeable difference in clarity after 30-45 minutes with it running.

You might want to consider getting the monochrome version and adding a filter wheel. The flea3 is fast enough that you should be able to get several hundred frames in each filter for stacking.

I was a die hard color camera person until I couldn't find my color flea2 for a while (forgot I'd put it in my computer bag!), so I used a mono Scorpion with an orion filter wheel, and got sharper results!

@Steve - I found that it's nice to be able to reverse the direction depending on the ground temps. For out here, the ground stays hot for a long time, so I've had better results pulling the air down the tube instead of blowing warmer ground air up the tube.

For reversible fans, it's easy if they are DC but the shape of the blades might make it work well in only one direction. So, what I do is just pull my contraption out and flip it around.

Hi Tim,

Yes, I've considered that (mono). I'm not sure I want to make the investment in a filter wheel and filters just yet let alone the added processing work. There are some imagers over on the Solar System Imaging forum that are still getting impressive results from one shot color. 60 fps with the 618 chip will be a big step forward.

But at some point I'll move on to mono.

I also bought the Lumicon LA1020 3” extension tube for when I’m not using the filter slider (which is most of the time right now as I haven’t progressed to RGB imaging yet). This is nice as it is 1.25” OD all the way up to the top, only flairing out to 1.25” ID at the very end. This allows me to vary the height quite a bit depending on if I’m doing visual or camera work and then fine focus with the helical focuser.

I have a couple of those Lumicon focusers. One is on the Kludge 6" f/10.3 and the other is on a 3" f/6 I assembled from an Edmund mirror, cell, and secondary mirror. I used PVC pipe for the tube. Since the tube is so small, I had to cut a square opening to mount the focuser to the sharp curve of the tube. The sides are about flush with the tube this way.

I wish mine were the filter slider combo focusers, though. I hadn't thought about using an extension tube with mine. Will have to try that!

-Tim

Thanks Mark. This scope is my pride and joy. I did get a Flea3 color camera last year but have been so busy at work and the weather here has been fairly awful which has caused me to just about miss this Jupiter season. I hope to get out and see what it can do on Saturn.

Last year I had a lot of fun with several members of the group here when we did a classic scope exhibit at NEAF. The Cave garnered a lot of complements there.
