Larry - no, it is just a dark reflection. Here is a better angle. The numbers weren't black on mine, but with the polishing residue in them now they are a little easier to read.
Beautiful restoration project - about the engraved markings - paint them with thinned black paint then rub off the excess on the circle with a rag soaked in acetone - done right, the paint in the engraved markings will stay put and the excess on the outer surface will disappear. Note that any pits or gouges in the circles will also pick up paint.

Jon, I'm really enjoying your pictures. Makes me really upset that I sold mine. This is a showpiece and you are doing an excellent job returning it to its original beauty. Thanks, Bill

Thanks Danny. That's another excellent idea for filling in the engraving.
Thanks Bill. At first I wasn't going to turn this into a big restoration with a bunch of pictures but it has sort of turned into that. Glad you like the pictures. I like restoring things and documenting the process. Once I get this done I may post a picture of my last restoration in the Clasaholic thread (it was not a telescope though).

Jon Awsome job, The motors are now dicontinued.. Not made any more. Your mount is looking wonderfull and from one (aveman to another you rock! I have darkened and whitened many scopes setting circles and tha last couple time I have used chalking. Seemed easier to deal with. Your posts are inspiring me! Maybe if I ever get the project list caught up I will dig back into the stock 1965 F8 and polish up a couple more parts. I love the way your legs look!! I did polish and clear coat many parts as I was cleaning. Like the aluminum 9 lobe knobs just looked to cool silver to paint them..

Tom Caves Astrolas are awsome American made perfect telescopes!
This old 10" F8 scope has really blown a few folks minds while standing at the eyepiece. Mine included. It is a pefect example of why Caves are a legend and one of the most classic telescopes we get to restore and use.
I will never forget the night I had Ed Zucardi and John Pons saying that the mirror in my 10" was one in a million, A perfect 10" F8 Cave mirror. Then they stood there using it for a hour while it was setup at the feet of Johns 10" Zeiss.Telling me never sell this telescope!! That was a good night! After doing all the work to restore the telescope...Made it all worth it!
I had a 1972 10" F6 Until a friend talked me into sending it to him and for deep sky it was great. Some nights I could see color in M42 with it. It now lives in Seakonk, Mass. with my good friend Rich He loves it.
Again Kudos to you for the great restoration work you are doing and the perservation of what is another one in a million telescope what will be around long after we are all off to bigger things..
Clint

Thanks Clint and Amen to your comments above about Caves! I really appreciate the nice comments about my restoration too. I’m trying to do this one justice. Glad I can be an inspiration to you (and Dan).
I always love seeing pictures of your f/8. It looks awesome. I really like the brass setting circles too.
Boy, I wish I could make it out to the Mt. Pinos Classic Star Party. It sounds like it’s going to be the event of the year…..Classic scope overload!

Well it’s been a bit since an update. I had another business road trip so progress stalled for a few days. But it is time to finish this up and get it back out under the stars. If you like pictures here are a bunch.
Next was a refinish of the finder scope tube since it had a few nicks. Small Dixie cups are great for masking off the inside of the tube. The focuser end has internal threads but the objective end has external threads so a little masking tape needed there.

Then the declination drive reassembly was next. First the triangular adapter plate is screwed to the motor. There are two drive hubs that have an internal toothed rubber sleeve that connect them together. The hub with the smaller hole goes on the motor.

This shows the rubber coupler on the motor drive hub and the other hub is on the worm gear shaft just prior to screwing the worm gear assembly to the mounting plate.

Next I re-did the AC cables. As mentioned they were badly cracked and dangerous. The cord is two conductor and has a ribbed outer jacket. This is similar to the cord on most vacuum cleaners. I had an old florescent lamp that had exactly the same cord so it sacrificed itself for the greater good. In trying to keep things original I re used the Leviton plugs. One was missing the cardboard disk between the prongs so I cut out a new one from non-corrugated cardboard. And I had to polish the brass prongs of course.

Time to put the electrics back together. First I mounted everything to the clock drive plate. The two AC cords are clamped down with metal tabs under the screws that hold the clock drive motor mounting bracket to the plate. The dec. drive AC cord is in the left hole in the picture and the clock drive cord in the right. Then I re installed the clock drive switch and lamp followed by the leads for the dec. drive and dec. control box. The dec. control box lead goes through the upper hole and the drive motor lead goes through the hole on the right side, being careful not to put them through the cover mounting holes or the holes that mount the plate to the RA shaft housing. I stripped about two inches of the outer jacket off of each AC cord.

Then I wired up the dec. control. The green wire from the control box gets spliced to the green wire from the drive motor. The black wire from the control box gets spliced to the black wire from the drive motor. The white lead from the AC cord goes to the red wire from the control box and the black wire from the AC cord goes to the red wire from the drive motor. Each splice was soldered and covered with heat shrink tubing.
If you are curious why there is a red, white and two black wires going into the dec. drive motor but only a green, black and red wire coming out of the gray jacketed lead inside the drive housing - there are splices in the black covering that goes to the motor. Inside these are spliced – white from the motor to black in the grey lead, red from the motor to green in the grey lead and both blacks from the motor to red in the grey lead.

Next I wired up the clock drive. The black lead from the RA AC cord and one lead from the clock drive motor are soldered to the outer terminal on the lamp that does not also have the resistor connected to it. The resistor goes from the opposite outer terminal to the center terminal. The white lead from the RA AC cord goes to one side of the switch. The small blue wire, which is soldered on the side of the lamp with the resistor, goes to the other side of the switch along with the other clock drive motor lead. Normally I would cover the solder joints on the lamp and switch with pieces of heat shrink tubing to keep the wire from flexing and possibly cracking at the solder joints but Cave didn’t do this so I left them exposed.
Plug in and test.
