Next is the RA drive worm and gear. This took some fiddling until I was happy with the lack of play between the worm gear and ring gear but could still turn the large driven gear easily. Then I turned the clock drive motor until its gear engaged the driven gear. At this point I also fiddled with the three screws on the clutch. Even though the rest of the mount and scope were not on I got it where I felt it had enough tension to stay put but could still manually adjust the scope position without too much effort. It doesn’t take much of a turn on these screws to change the tension a lot.

Then the dec. shaft, cradle support bearing, dec. drive and cradle. I think on most Cave mounts you could bolt the cradle to the shaft and slide it down through the dec. drive, bearing and dec. housing from the top. But on this, with the lower 12” of the shaft being chrome plated, the plating is to too thick to go through the bearings. So it was a bit of a trick to slide it up from the bottom and hold it while sliding on the bearing, dec. drive and cradle from the top and getting the bolt into the cradle.

Next is the dec. setting circle. There is a thin nylon thrust washer between the setting circle and the housing. Last is the 29 lb. counterweight. Let’s get that OTA on!

Taa Daa! The Cave is smiling. I’m smiling. It really is a pretty scope. All collimated and ready to go…….and we now have three or four days of cloudy and sometimes rainy weather coming.

Dan (Datapanic) was nice enough to sell me the Cave guide scope rings he had. So I’d like to find a period correct 60mm x 700mm scope for this. Some of the Cave stuff I have describes these as either 30x, 100x or 80x. Anyone know who the manufacturer was for these? Anyone have one they want to sell?

It looks very nice! Hope the skies clear up so you can test it out. You did an excellent job on it in such a small time too!

Jon WOW!!
Thats is awsome dude.. Great work and wonderfull scope. Well I think you converted me into a (ave fan... LOL.

As to the guide scopes the were Circle T scopes and had a cave sticker on them. The last I saw Larry Thaxton had one a while back he is on AM look him up..

If this was a F8 it would be perfect... Just kidding. Really you have really done a great job of restoration and I know you will be amazed on a regular basis. My Cave produces images that were very close to the Tak 130 in a side by side test. Hard to beat em for ease of use or just plain fun.. And yours is just plain awsome!!

Awesome. Looks perfect, a real jewel. Also it shows how much better the original fit and finish was compared to the one I bought from Cave. I must have really irritated Tom with my phone calls. Something tells me if mine looked like yours I would have never parted with it. Thanks for the saga and photo documentation.

Thanks everyone. I’m really happy with the way it cleaned up. I can’t wait to get it out and spend some time with it.

Dan – yea, it didn’t take too long, I had a lot of free time to work on it. And it wasn’t that bad to start with. Your Maynard Clark was much rougher and more complex but you’re doing a fantastic job on that and it is going to turn out really stellar.

Clint – thanks, I’ll look out for an appropriate Towa 60mm. I did find the one Larry had for sale. It was an 80mm and is long gone. But that’s the first one I’ve seen with a Cave sticker on the focuser so that was interesting to see.

My Cave Custom Delux had a 60/700mm guide scope with no sticker or ID on it. It had good optics tho. I have an almost identical Meade guide scope that would look and work just fine. Let me know if you're interested.

Bill - PM sent.

Gregg - Thanks. It is pretty sweet. I really love the Sears but even when I had my first one back in the early '70s I wanted a Cave and now, almost 40 years later, I finally have one. Here's a picture you might like of the two together. I don't know how far the Clasaholic disease will go, it's in its early stages right now. These two will keep me occupied for a while but some of those Unitrons sure look nice and the Sears 6345 sounds pretty special and....OK....I'll stop now....
